"Historical Treatise on the Study of Modern Japanese Chinese Folk Literature", by Zhang Zhen, Shanghai Ancient Books Publishing House, December 2021.

Synopsis

Sino-Japanese cultural exchanges have a long history, the influence of Han culture has penetrated almost all aspects of Japanese society, and the dissemination and study of Chinese folk literature in Japan is an important part of Japanese sinology.

Since the Edo period, Chinese folk literature has been introduced to Japan in large quantities, becoming a popular work of the Japanese people, with a wide audience base; traditional Japanese sinology has laid a deep foundation for Japanese sinologists; the introduction of Western studies has changed Japan's literary concepts; the establishment of modern universities and the formation of modern academic systems have made literary research on the university pulpit; the writing of literary history, the concept of folk literature, especially the teaching of Chinese folk literature courses at the highest institutions in Japan, such as Mori Akanami, Naoki Kano, and Wen Shiotani. At a time when neither Europe nor the United States nor China had yet established a discipline system for the history of Chinese folk literature, Japan, an Eastern country that absorbed the advanced achievements of the West and had a great sinology tradition, played a special historical role, establishing a complete discipline system of Chinese folk literature and history at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Traditional Chinese literature has set off another climax in Japan since the Edo period, and this climax, unlike the Edo period, was completed under the great changes in the world pattern of the East and the West.

The book is based on first-hand information as much as possible, placing the research on the dissemination and reception of Chinese folk literature in Japan in the entire academic process, expanding from a "research history" to a "research network" to argue the status and significance of The study of Chinese folk literature in Japan in modern times in the history of Japanese sinology and even in the history of international sinology. Research is mainly conducted from the following aspects:

New Book Recommendation | Zhang Zhen: "A History of Chinese Folk Literature Research in Modern Japan"

The December 2021 edition of Gaien Publishing Co., Ltd., written by Makino Reijirohara, Makoto Kaku, Gakuen Publishing Co., Ltd.

I. Discuss the background of the formation of the discipline of Chinese folk literature and history in modern Japan. As an important content of Chinese literature, Chinese folk literature formed a boom in Japan in the Edo period, laying a solid audience foundation for the study of Chinese folk literature in modern Japan. With the continuous introduction of Western studies in modern times, the modern academic system in Japan has gradually taken shape, and the discipline of chinese folk literature history has been established in Japan before the Chinese mainland, and the study of Chinese folk literature has ushered in unprecedented changes.

2. Discuss the relationship between Waseda University and the founding of the discipline of Chinese folk literature and history. Waseda University's predecessor, Tokyo Junior College, established Japan's first pure literature department featuring Chinese folk literature, and the influence of Mori's first Chinese folk literature course at Tokyo Vocational College was undoubtedly far-reaching, and as far as Waseda University was concerned, the tradition pioneered by the Mori clan has been preserved and carried forward.

Third, through the academic origins, teacher lineage, academic competition and other aspects of the two university schools in Tokyo and Kyoto, the overall appearance of the two university schools is displayed from a more macroscopic perspective. After the establishment of the Department of Chinese Folk Literature History at Waseda University, the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University also successively opened courses on Chinese folk literature and established a discipline system for the history of Chinese folk literature, which has become the main position in the study of Modern Japanese Chinese Folk Literature and the "East and West" in the history of Japanese sinology.

4. Explore the study of Chinese folk literature outside the schools of Tokyo and Kyoto in the first half of the 20th century. With the gradual advancement of foreign expansion, Japan established two imperial universities in the colonies dominating East Asia: Jingcheng Imperial University and Taipei Imperial University, both of which carried out their own unique research on Chinese folk literature. In addition, many private universities have carried out research on Chinese folk literature with their own characteristics.

Fifth, the study of modern Japanese Chinese folk literature should be discussed from an international perspective. The study of Chinese folk literature in Japan is not only an important part of Japanese sinology, but also an important part of international scholarship, that is, the study of Chinese folk literature in Japan is not an isolated academic phenomenon, and its occurrence and development have always been linked to international scholarship. This section attempts to outline the academic connections and interactions between the West, Japan, China, China, China, And Other East Asian countries in the history of Chinese folk literature research.

Sixth, the research history of several important issues such as Southern Opera, "Water Margin", and Dunhuang Folk Literature is selected to be discussed. In the history of Chinese folk literature in Japan since the Meiji Restoration, there are many problems that have not been solved by a single scholar in a certain paper or a certain treatise, but the result of the joint research of many scholars in the past few decades, which has become an important issue in the history of modern Japanese Chinese folk literature research.

Postscript

This book is a revision of the doctoral dissertation. Looking back six or seven years ago, when I was writing my doctoral dissertation in the "mountain temple" of Nanjing University, I did not know that the fangfei in the world would be exhausted and the peach blossoms of the mountain temple would bloom. NTU is my long-cherished institution of higher learning, and I am glad that I was able to spend three years here.

In the three years of Nanyong, the person who has had the greatest influence on me and is most grateful to me is my supervisor, Professor Miao Huaiming. The mentor was very kind to me, but at the same time very strict. When I was first admitted, my mentor instructed me through the homework I had to do before entering the school via email, which was equivalent to letting me read the "preparatory department" for nearly half a year before I went to doctoral studies. From the third day of school, for about a month in a row, I was "pressed" by my mentor to study in his study. Every time from about 2:30 p.m. to about 7:30 p.m., there was no "recess" in between. In the evening, after "school", the teacher also invited me to dinner.

During the time I was "pressed" in the teacher's study, I was under intense study pressure. When the teacher was desperately guiding, I desperately used my pen to write in a small book, fast, and sometimes I didn't know if I remembered it right, because there were too many names and book titles that I had never heard of... Of course, I didn't dare to show it to the old man, but occasionally I didn't know how to knock on the side of some unknown names and book titles...

But the teacher seemed to be effortless, still talking; not only did he, but he also stood on a chair and took the relevant books out of the shelves one by one and gave them to me, asking me to write down the title, author, and other information.

Teacher Miao Huaiming and his study

At that time, my mentor told me that as a discipline in the modern sense, Japanese folk literature is earlier in time than China itself, and has a certain influence on China itself, which is a very worthy problem to study, and there is no monograph in this regard. Under the guidance of my mentor, I began to really come into contact with overseas sinology, a long-standing and rather unfamiliar discipline. I devoted almost all my time to studying, but I still completed only a doctoral dissertation, which only studied a very small aspect and part of Japanese sinology, which can probably only be described as a drop in the ocean.

Thankfully, during my phD studies, I was finally given the opportunity to visit Japan, and with the guidance and help of my visiting supervisor, Professor Yumi Okazaki of Waseda University, I was able to collect as much information as possible related to the research topic, and most of these materials came in handy in the writing of papers. Of course, in the process of writing, I also got the help of many alumni, who either provided research materials or polished English abstracts, which were difficult to describe in detail.

After graduating with my ph.D., I was introduced to Wenzhou University by Mr. Yu Weimin, a senior professor of liberal arts at Wenzhou University. Because after graduating from undergraduate, I have been a secondary school teacher for three years, so this is not the first time to enter the workplace, but despite this, I still have some timidity, and Professor Zhu Yuqi has always given me great encouragement. Since the beginning of his work, he has made some insignificant achievements in the care and promotion of his teachers and leaders, but at the same time, he also deeply feels the inadequacy of personal learning and the limitation of his ability.

Professor Zhu Yuqi lecture poster

This book was successfully published thanks to the strong support of the party and government leadership team of the School of Humanities of Wenzhou University and the funds for the construction of Chinese disciplines, professor Yang Wanli for his warm help, and Mr. Liu Sai and Zhang Weixiang of Shanghai Ancient Books Publishing House for their hard work. Some of the contents of the book have been published in various forms in publications, the Internet and other platforms, during which they have also received a lot of guidance and help, in this small afterword, please forgive me for not being able to thank them unanimously.

At that time, the scene when discussing the topic of the thesis in the enshi study was still clear in sight, and the whole manuscript was completed, and while it was relieved, I was afraid that the dissertation still had many deficiencies, and there was the hard work of the negative tutor.

In the blink of an eye, it had been several years since I graduated with my Ph.D. No one has ever "pressed" me like this to read.
