In the early morning of March 8, 1985, the battlefield of the Laoshan Round Battle was thick with fog and drizzle. At this time, the attack detachment organized by the 1st Regiment and 1 Battalion of the 1st Division of the 1st Army of the PLA Army had quietly moved, and the 10 assault groups were divided into eight roads and advanced along the pre-opened passage to several positions of the Vietnamese army on the nara front.
Assault groups secretly marched along the narrow passage in the dark, digging in and removing the remaining mines. At about 6 o'clock at dawn, our artillery covered the Vietnamese positions, and then the Vietnamese army carried out surveillance and shooting at the front of the highlands with artillery fire. The command ordered the assault groups of the 1st Battalion to speed up the advance. At about 6:37 a.m., groups 1-4 of the 1st Company entered the north and south sides of Hill 168, only 15-20 meters away from the Vietnamese sentry; the 5th-8th group of the 2nd Company reached the foot of the hill on the west side of Hill 156 and continued to approach 17 meters from the Vietnamese sentry; groups 9 and 10 of the 3rd Company had cleared the remaining mines near the passage and continued to explore Highland No. 166.
At about 7 o'clock, Vietnamese artillery in the direction of Han Yang fired at The 146th and 147th Heights. Three minutes later, the Vietnamese sentries on Hill 156 also fired two random shots at the front of the position, and prepared to return to tun bing cave for dinner without finding the 2 company assault group. At 07:05, the battalion commander ordered each assault group to attack its respective targets.
The assault groups of the 1st and 2nd Companies quickly approached their respective targets in separate ways. At about 7:12 a.m., taking advantage of the opportunity of the Vietnamese sentry to enter the cave to eat, the assault groups of the 1st and 2nd companies launched a lightning attack. The groups of the 2nd Company advanced rapidly and marched in accordance with the coordinated action planned before the war, first destroying the enemy of the outposts on the northwest side of the 156 Heights, and then sealing all the openings held by the Vietnamese army on the high ground with great speed, and immediately turning to the search and suppression of the holes. After more than 20 minutes of fighting, the enemy in the surface position of No. 168 Highland was annihilated, and then all the openings of the Vietnamese army on the position were sealed, and it was also turned to search and suppress the holes.

The 12 members of the assault group of the 3rd Company divided into left and right roads and advanced forward, and when they approached the west and north sides of Hill 166 respectively, they were attacked by Vietnamese fire from Hill 166 and Hill 167 respectively. The 1st Battalion fire team immediately opened fire, suppressing the Vietnamese fire points that destroyed the two highland surface positions with direct fire and simple fire of the 107 rocket artillery. The assault group of the 3rd Company braved vietnamese artillery fire according to the instructions of the company commander. Group 9 on the left side, led by the group leader, rushed to the nameless heights on the west side and quickly annihilated the Vietnamese troops in the surface positions. While continuing its assault on the main peak of Hill 166, it was met with fierce fire from three Vietnamese fire points, and the advance was blocked. At this time, the 10 groups on the right side of the road resolutely turned to the main attack under the command of the group leader, and constantly jumped towards the main peak under the cover of firepower.
Seeing our commando team rush up, the Vietnamese troops on Hill 166 panicked, and more than 40 people fled in groups in the direction of Hill 164. After the deputy company commander of the 3rd Company discovered the intention of fleeing the enemy, he immediately ordered the 60 artillery squad to open fire and successively destroyed the fleeing Vietnamese troops with artillery fire. At this time, 10 groups of team members destroyed the 3 Vietnamese fire points blocking the road with continuous explosions, killing the main peak in one fell swoop. The 9 groups on the left side also rushed to the heights, and after fierce fighting, annihilated the enemy in the surface position of The 166 heights, annihilating a total of 30 enemy troops, while our assault group did not suffer any casualties. Immediately, according to the coordinated action before the war, the groups turned to searching and suppressing holes.
After receiving reports that the surface positions of the three highlands were controlled by the assault groups of each company, the command ordered the artillery to stop shooting at the 156 heights, 168, and 166 highlands, and instead suppress the surrounding Vietnamese positions to prevent them from sending troops to reinforce the besieged enemy in the highlands. Next, the assault groups of our army accelerated the search and suppression battle, and the Vietnamese army was blocked in various barracks and fortifications, and basically had no strength to fight back, and they were eliminated by me one by one.
By 10:30 a.m., the Vietnamese troops in all positions had been wiped out, and our commando unit annihilated more than 170 enemy troops, creating a model example of a surprise attack on the enemy's position.
