The beauty of the material is not only reflected in the macroscopic, but also in its microscopic organization. In order to allow more material people to appreciate the beautiful material organization, cultivate the interest in exploring the microscopic world, improve the level of instrument use and art appreciation, the 8th Materials Microstructure Competition has been jointly organized by the Materials Science and Engineering Public Account, materials science network, journal "Int J Min Met Mater", "Materials Engineering". A total of 132 units from home and abroad, 467 entries were collected in the draft stage, and more than 24,300 people voted in the selection stage, and 5 experts scored and commented. Guo Jing's work "Now Step Forward from the Beginning" from Tsinghua University won the third prize. The works are as follows:

[9 Tsinghua University: Guo Jing] Title of the work: And now step forward from the beginning.
1. The story behind the work
According to Guo Jing, when she first took this photo, she felt that the heavy whirlpool had a lot of tension in the picture, and it seemed to suck people in after a long time. Therefore, when coloring, I hope to retain and strengthen this appeal, and choose a red and black color with strong visual impact. Combined with the original composition, the dynamic blur of vignette angles and edges is added, making the picture more dynamic and making people feel immersive. Finally, the astronaut's material was added to the theme "Now Step over the Beginning", but the characters were not put very large, one was to highlight the grandeur of the "black hole" that could swallow everything, the small fragility of human beings, and the other was to not destroy the original more complete composition. The final presentation hopes to present an epic sense of shock while giving the audience a spiritual inspiration.
It is understood that this photo is a 1T'-MoTe2 crystal taken with an OLMPUS BX51M optical microscope. Using Na2MoO4 and Te as precursors, 1T'-MoTe2 crystals were grown on a sapphire substrate with cVD in a tubular furnace. The inspiration for the picture is Mao Zedong's poem "Remembering Qin'e LouShanguan", "Xiongguan Mandao is really like iron, and now he steps forward from the beginning." From the beginning, the mountains are like the sea, and the remnants of the sun are like blood. The overall tone of the photo is red and black, symbolizing the bloody sun, the blood shed by the heroic struggle of the ancestors, the tragic scene of the war, but it also symbolizes the raging fire, the last darkness before dawn, and the burst of "the spark of the stars can burn the plains". The main body in the figure is a heavy whirlpool, nested circles, symbolizing the turbulent storm and the mighty and unstoppable trend of social change. At the same time, this also resembles the recently published black hole photo, so the element of astronauts has been added to the picture processing, symbolizing the rapid development of science and technology and the gradual revelation of the mysteries of the universe by mankind. In the end, the astronauts faced with a mysterious, unpredictable, and extremely dangerous black hole, and did not fear and retreat, but bravely faced it, just as the revolutionary ancestors who resolutely rushed into the center of the whirlpool of struggle and the fiercest place of the war for the sake of their homeland and the world, and as Mr. Lu Xun said, "Real warriors, dare to face the bleak life, dare to face the dripping blood." Guo Jing said: "I hope that this picture will inspire all of our scientific researchers to be able to "start from scratch" in the face of difficulties and setbacks.
2. Expert praise
This work has also been well received by expert judges: the mountains are like the sea, the sun is like blood, the whirlpool of the circle is like the storm of time, a mysterious force, just like the magic of the world. The picture has a full sense of science and technology, a strong scientific nature, a high level of rendering, a high degree of fit between the theme and the picture, a strong sense of layering, and a high degree of combination of science and art. The spiral structure presented in this work is quite shocking, with a strong visual impact. The material in the work is this kind of Na2MoO4 and Te as a precursor to grow 1T'-MoTe2 crystals with cVD in a tubular furnace on a sapphire substrate, and the preparation method is scientific and reasonable. From an artistic point of view, the work sublimates the majesty of the material into a passionate and passionate struggle, and the symbolic meaning is clear. The color composition and collocation of this work are reasonable. It shows the endless scientific exploration, the unknown is frightening and curious. The deep whirlpool, the endless, the warm colors, the impulse to move forward, the addition of astronauts, seem to limit people's imagination, in fact, let people free to reverie may be better.
