Dajingmen - a national key cultural relics protection unit, located in Qiaoxi District, Zhangjiakou City, was built in the 17th year of Chongzhen (1644 AD) with a history of 378 years (as of 2022). Dajingmen is one of the four major passes in the Great Wall of China and has an important position in history. The Great Wall of Dajingmen, built in the 21st year of Ming Chenghua (1485), was built on the basis of the Great Wall of the Northern Wei Dynasty, with a history of more than 500 years.
The Dajing Gate is a very special pass among the many passes of the Great Wall of China. The passes of the Great Wall of the mainland are all called "Guan" and "Kou", and only this pass of Zhangjiakou is called "Jingmen", which contains the charm of "Shang Culture" and "Wu Culture", and also flows with the historical origin of national integration.
Since the 5th year of Longqing in the Ming Dynasty, the area around Yuanbao Mountain outside the Dajing Gate of Zhangjiakou has gradually formed a border trade market known in history as "Gong City" and "Tea and Horse Mutual Market". Livestock, furs, medicinal herbs, woolen fabrics, silverware, etc. from the Mongolian steppe and the hinterland of Europe were exchanged for silk, tea, porcelain and sugar, and the outside of the Great Frontier Gate became the inland port for the international barter trade in the north of the mainland. "Jingmen" means the gate of the border. In 1927, Gao Weiyue, the governor of Chahar, wrote on the lintel of the Dajing Gate the four large characters of "DahaoHeshan", which were vigorous and powerful, quite spectacular, and added charm to the Dajing Gate.
Dajingmen has gone through vicissitudes and is a witness to the history of Zhangjiakou, and many important historical events are closely related to Dajingmen. Dajingmen witnessed not only the poverty and weakness of old China, but also the prosperity of new China and the great historical changes in Zhangjiakou outside Saiwai. Zhangjiakou people are proud of the Dajing Gate, which has naturally become the symbol of Zhangjiakou.
