Beijing, January 20 (China News Service) -- China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has disclosed the latest data on 5G development: by the end of 2021, a total of 1.425 million 5G base stations will be built and opened, and the number of 5G mobile terminal connections will reach 518 million.

Zhao Zhiguo, spokesman of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China and director of the Information and Communications Administration, introduced at the press conference of the State Council New Office held on the 20th that China has built the world's largest and most technologically advanced 5G network, and by the end of 2021, the number of 5G base stations in the country will exceed 1.4 million, of which more than 800,000 5G base stations will be built and shared, and the 5G network has covered all prefecture-level cities, more than 98% of the county towns and urban areas and 80% of the townships and towns, and the breadth and depth of network coverage will continue to improve in 2021.

In 2021, the number of new 5G base stations reached 654,000, the number of 5G mobile phone terminal connections reached 518 million households, and the shipment of 5G mobile phones reached 266 million units, an increase of 63.5% year-on-year, showing a steady growth trend.

In terms of applications, 5G applications in the fields of industry, cultural tourism, energy, transportation and other fields have gradually expanded, taking "5G + Industrial Internet" as an example, typical application scenarios such as remote equipment control, machine vision quality inspection, production efficiency control and so on have been deeply applied in key industries such as mining, ports, steel, electric power, petrochemicals and chemicals.

Zhao Zhiguo said that in the process of development, 5G still faces relevant challenges such as technology industry to be broken, business model to be further matured, and ecological environment to be further optimized.

2022 is a key year for the large-scale development of 5G applications. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology focuses on three aspects of work in 5G, one is to promote the industry to carry out key core technology research on 5G; the second is to carry out 5G network construction in a moderately advanced manner and continue to expand the breadth of county and township coverage; the third is to promote the large-scale development of 5G applications, create an upgraded version of "5G + Industrial Internet", and excavate a number of typical application scenarios such as production line level and workshop level.
