Hong Kong's Consumer Price Index 2021 Shows Underlying Inflation rate of 0.6%

Hong Kong, 20 Jan (Xinhua) -- The Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) released a consumer price index for December 2021 showing that the total basic consumer price inflation rate in Hong Kong for the whole year of 2021 averaged 0.6%.

Statistics show that the composite consumer price index for the whole of 2021 rose by 1.6% year-on-year, and the basic consumer price inflation rate rose to 1.4% in December 2021.

According to an analysis by a spokesman for the HKSAR Government, the year-on-year increase in dining out and takeaway expenses was widened by the low comparative base caused by the fourth wave of the epidemic. Prices in energy-related projects have accelerated further, with significant increases in prices of individual major CPI components, such as clothing and transport. However, price pressure on other major components remains modest.

Looking ahead, a spokesman for the HKSAR Government believes that external price pressures may further increase due to high global inflation and logistics disruption due to the epidemic. As the impact of the new wave of the epidemic in Hong Kong on some consumption-related activities is limited, basic inflation should remain largely under control in the short term.
