Humanity's first photojournalist to cover the course of war in a comprehensive manner: Matthew Brady
Born in 1823 in the Lake George area of New York, Matthew Brady was a famous American war documentary photographer of the 19th century. Matthew Brady, best known for his political portraits and the American Civil War, took a portrait of Lincoln in 1860, showing Lincoln as a dignified, resolute, and wise man, a photograph that refutes what his opponents described as crude, foolish, and inept. Lincoln said: "Brady's photographs and Cooper College speeches made me president of the United States. ”
From 1861 to 1865, Brady organized 20 members of the photographic team to take photos of the historic Civil War in a realistic style, allowing the public to witness the north-south conflict as the war unfolded, thus recognizing the devastation of the war. Brady's objective, unsentimental documentary style of photographing armies, battlefields, and cities destroyed by war is a prime example of early documentary photography.
