Create a "good time" after school Shanghai Jing'an to explore "three-stage" after-school services

After the start of the new semester, the children of Hetian Road Primary School in Jing'an District, Shanghai gradually prepared their new curriculum. The "my class schedule I decide" on the head of the table shows its "difference" - the class schedule is "unique" for each person, and the nearly three hours after school are divided into learning, autonomy and warm moments, and the after-school time is enriched and diverse.

"The three 'moments' are mainly based on completing homework, carrying out various interest activities, and evening care, and students can choose to participate in segments or the whole process according to their own needs." Zhang Junjin, principal of Hotan Road Primary School, said.

Entering the classroom, children are drawing their own "exclusive curriculum" by hand, with different colors, patterns, and contents. For example, in the autonomous moment column, some students have to learn programming and animation, some students have to do thinking training and handicrafts, and some students have to practice fancy jump rope and participate in English drama rehearsals. In the corridor of the teaching building, a large poster shows the independent moment innovation literacy course group, and the five color blocks are marked with five types of courses such as visual arts, stage sports, science and technology research, creative labor, and basic development for students to understand and choose; learning, warm moments, Monday to Friday will have different main subjects and contents every day - Chinese, mathematics, English, labor, reading and so on.

Such a "three-stage" after-school service is not unique to Hotan Road Primary School. The reporter learned that Jing'an District pioneered the "three-stage" service model in 2019, aiming to give priority to meeting the needs of primary school students to complete their homework in school, give full play to the characteristics of running schools such as theme-based comprehensive activities and project-based learning, continuously improve the quality of after-school services, help students grow physically and mentally, and create a green education ecology that reduces burdens and increases efficiency.

Up to now, all 50 primary schools in Jing'an District (including private and nine-year consistent primary schools) have carried out after-school services in schools, realizing the "two full coverage" of urban compulsory education schools, students in need and parents' knowledge, open campuses, and students' willingness to stay "three hundred percent". The after-school service structure has also been upgraded from the beginning of "happy 30 minutes + self-help hour + warm hour" to a service structure that creates learning moments, autonomous moments and warm moments.

Many parents said that the "three-stage" after-school service makes them feel "very down-to-earth", which not only relieves the time pressure of picking up their children from school, but also allows them to spend quality time in school after school.

The implementation of the "one school, one plan" has highlighted the characteristics of each school. At the independent moment, the primary school affiliated to Shanghai First Normal School relied on the school's "happy expansion curriculum system" to open more than 40 cross-class and cross-year clubs such as film and television dream factory, drone, artificial intelligence, and red scarf college; the first central primary school in Jing'an District combined with the characteristics of "cultivating modern little citizens" to carry out a series of themed comprehensive practical activities such as sports, science popularization, reading, and art; at a warm moment, the third central primary school in Zhabei District, Jing'an District, innovated the characteristics of sunshine school, combined with folk culture and traditional festivals. Parent volunteers are regularly invited to conduct cultural lectures and labor skills counseling for evening nursery students.

In order to do a good job of the "three-stage style", each school has also continuously upgraded and innovated based on its own exploration foundation. Zhang Junjin said that at the beginning of the new semester this year, students will have to go through the process of after-school service selection. "The school sends students a 'self-needs questionnaire' to ask for interests, strengths, skills they hope to learn from the selected courses, the time when parents come to pick up school, etc., not only to understand the students' situation, but also to let students learn to understand themselves in the process of filling out the form."

Then, in the first week or two of school, students will shuttle from classroom to classroom after school, they will have to interview in the course they want to learn, and after the students and teachers choose in both directions, the class schedule will be finalized.

This rather "troublesome" process seems essential in schools. "Parents can complete the course selection at a rapid speed on the mobile phone, but the school does not know enough about the students, and the students do not know enough about themselves." Since after-school services are to be done, we must ensure quality. Zhang Junjin said.

In the primary school attached to Shanghai First Normal School, the school organized large and small clubs, the large ones had more than 40 people participating in the chorus, red film and television appreciation, the small ones had 16 people participated in the Acapella activities, and the 10 people participated in the guzheng training. "From Monday to Friday, we arrange a total of 64 club activities in 9 categories of health, science, art, labor, sports, puzzles, film and television, games, and reading, and the activity inquiry form is sent to every parent through the home-school network platform, and the survey consultation on the platform shows that the number of students participating in club activities has reached more than 90% of the total number of students in the school." Principal Lu Huiru said.

It is reported that in the process of promoting the "three-stage" approach, Jing'an District has effectively strengthened the guarantee and management of after-school service work, played a good role as the main channel of the school in after-school services, and promoted the normal long-term mechanism of after-school service work through multi-faceted support, whole-process management and personalized services. The Jing'an District Education Bureau has set up an annual regular special project to provide financial protection for the school, and also uniformly purchases comprehensive school liability insurance for each student in school, and the insurance time limit and content cover the after-school services in the school to improve safety and security.
