"News & Coffee" Spanish newsstands were reborn by mixed operations

According to the Spanish newspaper Le Monde website reported on January 17, a new newsstand combined with the business model of coffee shops was opened near Madrid's Piazza Sevada, and has achieved good results in the past four months since its opening. The restaurant is called "News & Coffee", which sells newspapers and magazines as well as a variety of coffee flavors for customers. The shop also sells a number of boutique periodicals from around the world. This successful mixed-use model has given this newsstand a new lease on life.

According to the report, "News & Coffee" sells a variety of independent and professional newspapers and periodicals, while also providing customers with their own roasted select coffee, which is of high quality and affordable. This model is the "fresh blood" of the newspaper sales industry.

"We wanted to maintain the function of a traditional newsstand, which was to sell newspapers, magazines, etc., while supplementing the sale of coffee. When we told the newspaper sales association that we wouldn't sell souvenirs and trinkets, they said, 'Are you crazy?' Pablo Pardo, co-founder of the project, said.

Pardo's partners are Frenchman Gautier Rabial, Italian Davide Daty and Belgian Jele Heupert.

They started their business in 2017. In 2019, 3 months before the pandemic began, they "resurrected" a newsstand in Barcelona that had been closed for many years. When they started this new business during the lockdown, there was a long queue in front of the first "News & Coffee".

"It's not easy to make a living as a newspaper retailer," Pardo admits, "but today, we finally succeeded." ”

They currently have a team of 30 employees aged 25 to 35, and have opened three "News & Coffee" in Barcelona and one in Valencia and Madrid. In an interview, Pardo was looking for a suitable location in Paris.
