New Zealand's 7.8 kg potato will undergo DNA testing

According to the Mirror reported on January 18, a couple in New Zealand discovered what may be the world's largest potato last year and must now undergo DNA testing on it to be finally confirmed.

Colin and Donna Craig-Brown, from near Hamilton, New Zealand, found a 7.8-kilogram potato in their vegetable garden last August and named it "Doug." The largest potato in the Current Guinness Book of World Records weighs less than 5 kilograms and was discovered in the UK in 2011. However, officials say that DOUG must undergo DNA testing to prove that it is indeed a potato before it can eventually be included in the world record. Although the couple was puzzled by this request, they still decided to do as they were asked. Part of doug will be genotyped by Scottish agricultural science researchers for variety validation. The couple said it was a "little mistake of nature's pleasure" that they encountered, and that although ugly, they liked it as much as a mother liked her own child. Currently, Doug has dried out and moldy, and for better preservation, they put it in the refrigerator. (Compiled and reported by China Youth Network)
