A new apartment building takes root in the Italian city of Turin. The steel-supported building looks like a forest, with trees taking root on alien balconies, ponds passing through cracks in the building's foothills, and lush gardens covering the roof. The whole building is like a living forest building, and it also hides the tree house that children dream of.
This option was made because of the need to construct an extraordinary building of residential buildings to compensate for the lack of homogenization and heterogeneity of the neighborhood. The goal of the scheme is to build block boundaries with a coherent façade, as well as a filter between the internal residential areas and the streets. The design wanted to create a smooth transition space that transitioned from the inside to the outside, and at the same time the space had to be pleasant. By purposefully using greenery and building materials to create a compact, distinctive building that is yet transparent, variable, and at the same time pleasant, the building achieves a natural transition between the elements.
It is a unique building because it is full of life: it is growing, breathing and changing, because there are 150 tree trunks high trees covering its balcony. There are also 50 trees planted in the courtyard garden, which together produce oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide, reduce air pollution, isolate noise, follow the natural cycle of the seasons, grow day by day, creating a perfect microclimate inside the building, reducing the rise and fall of summer and winter temperatures.
Solid wooden strips on the balcony filter the sun in the summer and in turn introduce the rays of sunlight indoors in the winter. Larch tile siding is a relatively soft and vibrant surface. Tree-shaped steel structures "grow" from the ground floor of the entire building towards the roof, holding up the planks of each floor balcony. These iron-red trees and the high and low greenery on the balconies echo and make the façade of the building unique.
One of the goals of this design project is to increase energy efficiency, for which several integrated solutions are employed: continuous insulation, sun protection, heating and cooling systems that use heat pumps to generate geothermal energy, and recovery of rainfall to irrigate green plants.
There are 63 residential units in this building. These living units vary, all with irregularly shaped balconies surrounding trees. The last floor is covered with a private green roof.
The greenery is diverse: large planting troughs on the balconies, courtyard gardens, green walls and roof gardens in front of the attic are everywhere.
The planting trough is planted with trees or shrubs of varying heights from 2.5 to 8 meters. Deciduous tree species have been planted in the house so that they can also get light in winter. The choice of tree species varies according to different needs, but all ensure a variety of leaves, colors and flowers.
When all the greenery is in full bloom, it gives the feeling of living in a tree house. You can dream of a house or live in a dream!
