Choe Jong-jae, the first official (deputy foreign minister) of the Rok ministry of foreign affairs, had a telephone conversation with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman on January 19 local time, and the two sides exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula issue, Iran, Ukraine, Myanmar political situation and other international affairs.

According to a report by Yonhap News Agency on January 19, the Rok Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the two sides shared information on the recent north Korean bomb shooting incidents on the same day, and reiterated that they would seek all feasible solutions for stabilizing and controlling the situation on the Korean Peninsula and restarting dialogue with the DPRK. The U.S. State Department also released information saying that Sherman condemned North Korea's recent multiple projectiles in violation of a number of United Nations Security Council resolutions, and the two sides discussed a plan to achieve the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea has launched missiles four times in 2022, and the United States has proposed additional sanctions against North Korea by the Security Council Sanctions Committee in addition to separate sanctions.

The two vice foreign ministers also exchanged views on the situation in Iran, Ukraine and Myanmar. On the situation in Ukraine, the US side introduced the relevant situation, and Choi Jong-jian said that the ROK side supports the US side's efforts to solve the problem through dialogue and diplomacy. The two sides also expressed concern about the current situation in Myanmar and agreed to maintain cooperation with the international community to "promote the restoration of democracy in Myanmar."

On January 19, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said in response to an inquiry that China has taken note of the recent developments in various aspects of the situation on the Korean Peninsula, and what I can tell you is that the UN Security Council did not discuss the arrangements for the so-called draft resolution on sanctions against the DPRK.
