Overheating camera software has problems with Apple VR/AR postponed 2023

Rumors about Apple releasing some sort of virtual reality/augmented reality headset have been circulating for years. According to Bloomberg, while there are reports that the company's first mixed reality headset could be released in 2022, the device encountered some hurdles in its development process and may not be released until 2023.

Bloomberg reported that Apple plans to release the headset at this year's Global Developers Conference, but "development challenges related to overheating, cameras and software make it harder to stay on track." These issues mean revealing that it could happen at the end of the year — or even later — and that the headphones will go on sale in 2023. Bloomberg reported that Apple apparently had plans to disclose the device earlier at one point; the company wanted to announce the device in 2021 and ship it in 2022.

Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The first headset is expected to be a high-end product, and Apple is considering a price of more than $2,000. Bloomberg said it will have two processors, at least one of which will be "on par" with the new M1 Pro chip that the company's updated MacBook Pro comes with. Analyst Mingchi Guo also reported that the device will have two chips, one of which is adjacent to the M1. Previous reports also said the headset will have two 4K OLED microdisplays, 3D sensors for hand tracking, and other advanced components, all of which could be responsible for the rumored high price.

Apple is also still developing a set of AR glasses, though they may still be far away. Bloomberg reported that the company plans to launch them "later in the century."
