Every year, the Beijing News Book Review Weekly will use an "annual reading ceremony" to review and summarize the ideological dynamics and publishing ecology of the past year. At the reading ceremony, we will talk to you about the good books published in 2021 and the authors behind the good books.
What does the future look like? This is a problem that we cannot predict. However, how we will recall the present moment in the future is something we can influence. Although life and years have different stages, they are not isolated compartments, in one stage after another, too many tiny details and memories, forming an invisible silk thread, re-intertwining the time scattered in the years.
Memory is the key to opening these threads, and words and books are where we collect the memory key. In the blink of an eye, another year has passed, and in this year's time, there may be a lot of new books sliding past you, leaving no trace of excess, but there will also be many bookmarks that will remain in the page number of your life. And what we do every year is to share these books that can become the pages of readers' lives.

2021 Beijing News annual reading recommendation list
Officially announced
This year's Beijing News annual reading ceremony is based on the "public, professional" reading stance, starting from mid-October, lasted two months, after multiple rounds of screening by the editorial department, from the publications in 2021, 82 of the annual Beijing News reading recommendation shortlist were selected, 12 experts and scholars in the industry were invited to discuss, and finally the editorial department determined the final 12 annual recommended books according to the opinions of the expert judges.

The three annual special tribute awards were officially announced
In addition to the twelve books recommended by the Beijing News in 2021, the Beijing News also specially selected 3 kinds of "special tributes", including the annual translator, the annual general writing and the annual publishing brand. These writings and readings, along with many good books, together make up a delightful landscape related to books in 2021.

From "Chernobyl" to "Crying Without Tears," gravity focuses on the details behind the history of human suffering and leads us to rethink the revelations of history. From Sympathy Nowhere to Ant Society, Gravity confronts real issues and provides us with a new perspective on human nature and society. From "Erased History" to "Mr. Smith to China", Gravity focuses on the fringe perspective of traditional historical narratives, painting a more complete picture of human history.
Although Gravity was founded less than four years ago, they showed a pioneering vision, focusing on cutting-edge issues in the humanities and social sciences. With a keen sense of problems, a very realistic topic, solid and excellent professional research, and a beautiful and fluent translation, Gravity has published a series of works that are both academic and popular in a short period of time. In an era of "short and fast", we pay tribute to gravity's deep concern for reality, and also to their efforts to communicate between academia and the public.

Thank you very much to the Beijing News for its recognition of gravity. For paper books, this is not the best era, we, like many of our peers, are carrying out difficult publishing exploration in this era; it is a great encouragement for us to be highly recognized by the Beijing News. Here, I would also like to thank Guangdong Publishing Group and Southern Publishing Media for creating a relaxed publishing environment for us, providing strong policy support, and thanking every member of the Gravity Team for their courage and dedication.
Although we are in Guangzhou, gravity and Beijing have always had an indissoluble relationship. Three years ago, the team's friends spent five hours in the dimly lit basement of a hotel in Beijing's Chaoyang district, the first big book we published. The name "Gravity" is also the inspiration found on a billboard on Line 6 of the Beijing subway. I regret not being able to come to Beijing today, but we are still honored to join you in the very meaningful cause of reading promotion. We have been working hard to introduce academic works into the reading horizons of public readers, which requires the feelings and courage of publishers, and also relies on responsible media such as the Beijing News, as well as scholars and book reviewers to create a good reading environment, and together provide readers with more diversified and rich ideological resources.
In the future, we will continue to explore how to renew the ancient medium of ideas such as books to provide more and better texts for everyone. We believe that history exists, and reading exists. In this somewhat blind pursuit of efficiency, publishing is still a particularly resistant industry to the erosion of time. "Gravity", a social science book brand under Guangdong People's Publishing House, was established in December 2018, and its published books cover the fields of humanities and social sciences such as history, philosophy, and sociology.
