According to the Daily Mail on January 17, local time, Mark Schlissel, the president of the University of Michigan (full name: University of Michigan Ann Arbor), recently received a letter from the school board informing him that he was fired, and he also lost $927,000 (about 5.88 million YUAN) in annual salary. Schlissel, 64, has been the president of the university since July 2014.
Schlissel was fired for the simple reason that he was found to be having an affair with a female subordinate (who was not publicly identified) and the two were found using work emails to intercede. From February 2019 to December 2021, the two continued to send emails, discussing many topics, including reading, recipes, travel and even ordering takeout, of course, there are also some topics that can only be between lovers. Ironically, Schlissel explicitly banned members of the school's management from having relationships with their subordinates last July. To this end, the board also said in the dismissal letter that "there is no doubt that you are very aware that any misconduct or communication between you and your subordinates will cause significant damage to the dignity and reputation of the University of Michigan."
Schlissel is a married man who has been married to his wife Monica for many years and has had four children. Monica is known to work at a well-known law firm as an energy consultant, but she has long lived in San Francisco and is separated from her husband.
Schlissel himself graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine with a M.D. and a Ph.D. in Physiological Chemistry, after which he worked at Johns Hopkins University, the University of California, Berkeley, and Brown University, respectively, and in 2014 succeeded Mary Sue Coleman as president of the University of Michigan. The position was signed every five years, which meant that Schliser had to slip away before he could finish his second term, but during Schliser's tenure, the university's tuition fees had risen to the highest level of any public university in the United States.
