This year marks the 50th anniversary of the restoration of the people's republic of China to its legitimate seat in the United Nations. On October 25, 1971, the 26th session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758: to restore all the legitimate rights of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations and to immediately expel representatives of the Taiwan authorities from the United Nations and all its subordinate agencies.

Today, 50 years later, we have deliberately found out the reports of foreign media on the restoration of the legitimate seat of the United Nations by the People's Republic of China in the "Reference News" 50 years ago for the benefit of readers.

The Washington Post published an editorial titled "China at the United Nations" on November 18, 1971, saying that for the United States, there is nothing particularly terrible about this. The full text is excerpted below:

Without China's participation, the world's major problems cannot be solved, and this has long become an international maxim. Now that Beijing has been given a voice, a right of vote and a veto at the United Nations, it can exert equally much influence on the issues that the United Nations deals with.

There is no doubt that, basically, China wants to re-divide the pie of world power so that it and its chosen friends get a larger share. It does not diminish its emphasis on that goal in order to live in the United Nations, and far from that, it enters the United Nations to advance it. The presence of the Representative of Beijing would undoubtedly make it easier to negotiate in the crisis that is bound to occur in the future.

For the United States, there is nothing particularly frightening about this. We have the strength to take care of our legitimate interests. Moreover, phenomena and causes should not be confused. The reason why the United States is required to participate in normal international diplomatic activities is not China's participation in the United Nations, but Its presence, size, and growing power.
