The third season of Narcos: Mexico has been renewed, but the show will have several changes, including that Diego Luna will not return to play Galado, the "godfather" of Mexican gangsters.

The first season of Narcos premiered in 2015 and received widespread acclaim. The series revolves around the rise of the infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar (Wagner Mora) in Colombia.

The first three seasons of the crime thriller focused on the rise and fall of Pablo Escobar, while the scheduled fourth season was changed to the first season of Narcos: Mexico. After the tense season two finale, the show is expected to continue the story in the third season, or start a new story.

Set in Mexico in the 1980s, the spin-off explores the origins of the Guadalajara drug cartel of the Mexican gangster "Godfather" Galado (Luna).

After the success of the first season, the show was renewed for a second season, which premiered in February 2020 and continues to revolve around Galado, who founded the Mexican drug cartel. The season ends in Galado's failure, where he was jailed for the murder of Drug Enforcement Agency agent Kiki Kamarena (Michael Pena).

There will also be major changes behind the scenes of the new season. After five seasons, Eric Newman will no longer be a producer and will focus on other new projects. Newman will continue to serve as executive producer, while Game of Thrones creator Carlo Bernard will serve as executive producer.

Filming for the third season, as in the previous two seasons, will continue in Mexico.

While the third season will not include Diego Luna, Scott McNari will return to play DEA Agent Walter Breslin, as will numerous other actors.

Set in the 90s, the third season will explore the wars that erupted after the fall of the Guadalajara Empire and will see the arrival of a new Mexican ace. Pablo's actor Mora will also return to direct two episodes of the season.

Luna won't be back in season three, which is not surprising. It was previously reported that Disney's "Star Wars Story: Rogue One" spin-off series will begin filming in November, and Luna will continue to play Cassian Amdo.

After the storyline of his character in the second season has ended, there has been speculation that Luna may not return in the new season, but it is still difficult to imagine what the show would take on without Luna.
