On January 14, Beijing time, the PGA Tour's first all-team event of 2022, the Sony Open, ended the first round of competition in Hawaii. Chinese player Li Haotong was in a brave state, grabbing eight birdies and swallowing a bogey throughout the day to tie for fourth place with a score of 63 (-7), a 2-stroke gap with the leader defending champion Luo Xiangyu. The 63 strokes in a single round equaled the record for the lowest number of strokes in a single round by Chinese players on the PGA Tour, and won the opening!

Li Haotong's first round scorecard

Defending champion Luo Xiangyu handed over a clean scorecard of 7 birds, 1 eagle and 0 bogeys, 100% of the fairway rate on the kick-off, and led the way with a score of 61 (-9). Veteran Jim Furyk hit his sixth career one-shot hole on a par-3 on the 17th hole and ended up tied for second place with Russell Henry for a 62 (-8) shot of 7-bird-to-bird, 1 eagle and 1 bogey.
