The Hawks have completed a 2-for-3 deal with the Knicks, sending 2019 first-round No. 10 picks Redish, Solomon Hill and second-round picks to the Knicks in exchange for 2022 first-round picks (protected from Charlotte Hornets) and former lotto rookie Knox. According to The Athletic, the Lakers also once offered the Hawks to get Redish, but the Lakers were only willing to make two second-round picks and the Hawks refused.
According to Frid Katz and Chris Kirschner, the Hawks have been selling Reddish extensively since the last draft cycle, when the Hawks asked for first-round picks and never changed the chips they asked for.
Hawks management has had conversations with the Pacers, Lakers, Cavaliers and Pistons over the past few months, according to sources, but the Hawks have been waiting for Reddish's first-round pick offer.
The Lakers offered Redish two second-round picks, but the Hawks still believe in a team that will ultimately provide the first-round picks they want. Sources said they asked Knicks rookie Quentin Grimes during the talks, who finished 25th in the first round of last summer's draft, but the Knicks rejected them.
There is no doubt that Hawks president Travis Schlenk has cautiously rejected Pelinka's offer and insisted on a better solution.
The 22-year-old Redish has a career-high 11.9 points in three shooting targets this season with 40.2/37.9/90.0 percent. The Lakers are understandably interested in him, as the 6-foot-8-tall Redish can provide the precise type of versatile, bulky, sporty forward that the team desperately lacks.
Redish is undoubtedly an upgrade addition to the 36-year-old Ariza and Stanley Johnson after ankle surgery, who are currently executing on his second 10-day contract.
The Lakers are known to be trying to upgrade their roster before the Feb. 10 trading deadline. With the exception of Tucker, Nunn and the 2027 first-round pick, their flexibility is severely limited. The Lakers are looking to send Jordan Jr. and Bazemore, possibly with cash or second-round picks.
