John's letter to his mother

The letter was written on December 6, 1945, a few months after the end of World War II. The writer was a sergeant named John Gonsalves, who was 22 years old and stationed in Germany.

The letter consists of two pages, in which John describes the bad weather and food at the station, Bat Obu, and ends with an expression of his love to his family, who tells his mother that he will soon be home. The front of the envelope is affixed with a six-cent stamp from the time.

The letter was not sent to his widow by the U.S. Post Office until 76 years and three days later.

Angelina, who lives in Vaughan, Massachusetts, said: "I am surprised that this letter is in very good condition. I read it and it was great. ”

When John wrote the letter, he did not know his wife Angelina. The two married in 1953 and have five sons. In 2015, John died at the age of 92.

Angelina and John's son, Brian Gonçalves, told CNN: "The mother had a happy smile on her face when she read her father's letter. I'm happy to see her look back on that history. ”

Why has this letter not been sent?

It is reported that the letter was discovered at the end of last year at the Pittsburgh Processing Center of the United States Post. Employees at the center thought the soldier's letter was important and thought it might be part of a family history, and they began tracking down who John's relatives were. When it was discovered that Angelina was John's wife, the U.S. Postal Service sent the letter to Angelina, along with an official letter of condolence.

The U.S. Postal Service's condolence letter reads: "We know that your husband passed away in 2015 and I sincerely mourn it. Thanks to some specialized investigation work by the postal staff, we were able to determine your address and deliver the letter to you. Despite the 76-year delay, given your age and the importance of this letter to your family's history, we consider it an important job to hand this letter over to you. ”

Angelina received the letter on December 9, 2021, just before the Christmas holiday, and her son said it was a meaningful Christmas gift that "felt like my father came back with us for the holidays".
