Germany plans to build a new 3 GIW offshore wind project

The Geographical Bureau (BSH) of the German Federal Maritime and Hydrological Agency has announced that it will build a new offshore wind farm with an installed capacity of 3 million kilowatts in the North Sea to accelerate the expansion of offshore wind power.

BSH said it will first conduct a strategic environmental assessment of the above-mentioned wind farms, and it expects to issue a draft specific development plan in the middle of the year, and the final version of the draft will be announced in late 2022 or early 2023.

It is understood that the planned offshore wind farm aims to complete Germany's new offshore wind power development goals. At the end of last year, the new German government set a target of installing 30 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity by 2030, while also committing to installing 40 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity by 2035 and 70 million kilowatts of offshore wind capacity by 2045.

Robert Habeck, Germany's Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, said Germany plans to increase the share of renewables in electricity supply to 80 percent by 2030. "In the future, renewables will form the core basis of the electricity supply, when sufficient electricity from offshore wind farms will play an important role, so we are creating the conditions for a significant increase in clean electricity production." The construction of a 3 GIW offshore wind project is an important first step, and Germany will explore more offshore areas in the future. ”
