The 2021 Golden Rooster Film Festival includes the Golden Rooster International Film Festival, the Golden Rooster Hong Kong Classic Film Festival, the Golden Rooster Domestic New Film Festival and other screening activities. From December 10th to 30th, the Golden Rooster Film Festival screened more than 100 domestic and foreign films, customizing a beautiful light and shadow tour for the majority of film fans.
The Golden Rooster International Film Festival, which was the first to open, with the theme of "World Light and Shadow Gathering on Heron Island", screened 38 outstanding international films for 20 consecutive days. The films come from 35 countries and regions, of which 9 premiered in Asia, 19 premiered Chinese mainland, and 97% won international film festival awards. The festival is divided into "panoramic unit", "competition unit", "BRICS unit" and "classic restoration unit", each with its own characteristics.
The films of the "Panorama Unit" and "Competition Unit" span a wide range of themes and are rich and diverse, and strive to provide a fresh global film art experience for domestic audiences. From this, we can understand the social issues that filmmakers around the world are concerned about and discuss. The "BRICS Unit" seizes the opportunity of the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the BRICS cooperation mechanism, focuses on the latest film achievements and cultural characteristics of the BRICS countries, and conveys the vision of using film to enhance cultural exchanges and economic cooperation between countries. The "Classic Restoration Unit" is designed for veteran movie fans, using advanced digital restoration technology to give classic movies a new look.
This year's Golden Rooster International Film Festival specially invited the famous film director Xie Fei and the film festival's senior curator, Mr. Marco Muller, as honorary promoters. They guide fans to international masterpieces through film promotion.
The vast number of fans and friends have also given enthusiastic support to the film festival. Box office pre-sales far exceeded previous editions, with more than 4,000 movie tickets sold in just three days.
The Hong Kong Classic Film Festival has added a blockbuster program to the Golden Rooster Film Festival, bringing many surprises to film fans. 11 films representing the top level of the Hong Kong film industry in all generations have returned to the big screen. One of the most popular are two 4K restorations by Wong Kar-wai directorial works, the IMAX version of "Fancy Years" and "Ah Fei Zheng Biography".
"Fancy Years" sold out quickly on the first day of ticketing, and so did the number of screenings. The festival specially selected "Heavenly Love" as the opening film to commemorate the famous Hong Kong actor Wu Mengda and director Chen Muk-sheng. This is the only film in which Uncle Da has won an Academy Award, and it is also Chen Musheng's directorial debut, which has special significance.
In order to attract more audiences into the theater, this year's Jinji Domestic New Film Exhibition carries out a series of national movie viewing activities with the theme of "Growing and Flowing, Rising tide in Xiamen". In addition to winning the "New Wing Promotion Honor" and the 20,000 yuan bonus, the young directors will also be recommended to join the Youth and New Literary and Art Group Working Committee of the China Filmmakers Association to inject fresh blood into Chinese films. These 10 films also met with film fans during the film festival on December 27-28, and young directors, as guests after the screening, also had a valuable opportunity to have a real dialogue with fans about their viewing experience and test their own works.
At the same time, among the 60 young directors shortlisted for the final evaluation of the short film season, 52 directors successfully obtained the qualification of the "2021 Golden Rooster Young Directors Training Camp" by submitting the proposition short film script.
It is worth mentioning that this year's Jinji Young Director Training Camp comprehensively upgraded the talent cultivation system, for the first time to carry out short film workshop practice activities, with "choice" as the limited theme, after the strict selection of the training camp, Chen Chuyi, Wang Chuanlin, Tan Yukun, Li Zongheng and Zhang Yi, 5 promising young filmmakers in the future, finally stood out, and completed their respective "choice questions" with the guidance of the supervising mentor group and professional production team composed of 500, Dong Yue, Yao Tingting, Zhang Chi, Huang Chaoliang and other professional filmmakers.
On December 29th, five young directors and supervising instructors brought their works to the premiere ceremony of the training camp and had a warm exchange with the audience. By sharing their diverse creations and unique narratives with the audience, young directors are constantly breaking through the imagination of short film creation in witnessing, participating and communicating.
