Labrador Systems will provide service robots to homes in 2023

Back at CES 2020, Labrador Systems was there to show off early versions of the home robotic system known as Retriever. After that, the company began rolling out prototypes to selected users. At this week's show, we'll see the results of these early tests, which are actually a more elaborate version of the version two years ago, but essentially based on the same principles. It resembles a robotic bar cart that helps elderly users and people with limited mobility.

Due to the aging population, elderly care has always been a big business for Japanese robotics. In the United States, Retriever is by far one of the best examples of U.S. companies that specialize in making robots to assist people. The product is primarily aimed at those who have the ability to live independently, but can benefit from the hands of an additional robot.

The system is capable of carrying up to 25 pounds of items and can be used to transport clothing, meals and other payloads around the house. It has a retractable pallet system that moves items from counters, shelves and custom reefers to the car. Below this is an extra storage space for items like food and medication, as well as a port to charge your phone.

The system will also be voice-controlled via Alexa, one of the company's backers. Commercial sales are planned for the second half of next year, with different price points depending on the function. Early adopters can get a Retract unit with an upfront payment of $1500, plus a service fee of $99 to $149 per month, depending on the financing.

The company also used the opportunity to announce a $3.1 million seed round, co-led by Alexa Fund and iRobot Ventures. The funds will be used to increase the number of engineering personnel and speed up production.
