Dry eyes, eye pain, lots of eye droppings... One-third of Chinese plagued by this disease!

Approaching the Spring Festival, it is time for the performance sprint of the workers at the end of the year.

Xiao Li, 28 years old, worked overtime on the computer day and night for a month. When I woke up this morning, I found that my eyes were red, dry, sticky, and I couldn't see things vaguely... After going to the hospital for a check-up, good guy, the doctor diagnosed the conclusion: dry eye.

Dry eyes, eye pain, lots of eye droppings... One-third of Chinese plagued by this disease!

(A 996 worker, who did not want to be named, talked to the boss)

The latest epidemiological studies show that the incidence of dry eye in Chinese is about 21% to 30%[1], which means that one in every three Chinese may have suffered from dry eye.

What are the symptoms of the eyes that may indicate dry eye? Is there a way to avoid it? Let's make it clear today.

There is a thin layer of tear tissue on the surface of the human eye, and every time you blink, the tears are evenly coated on the surface of the eye, helping our eyes to moisturize and lubricate.

If the eye itself has insufficient tear production, abnormal quality or quantity, tear fluid evaporation too fast, etc., coupled with the time of looking at the computer and mobile phone for too long, the frequency of blinking is reduced, resulting in unstable tear film or imbalance in the microenvironment of the eye surface [2,16], dry eye disease will occur.

One of the most familiar dry eye diseases, called "video terminal fatigue syndrome" (as the name suggests, is caused by long-term close contact with electronic video terminals such as computers, mobile phones, tablet computers [15]), which is a chronic ocular surface disease (similar to hypertension, diabetes, can not be cured).

There are actually two ways to determine whether you have dry eye [2,16,18]:

Self-perception: obvious dryness, burning sensation, foreign body sensation, itchy eyes, eye pain, may also be accompanied by a sense of needle prick;

Eye conditions: blurred vision, fluctuating vision, mucus in the eye (difficult to open the upper and lower eyelids in the morning), red eyes, eye fatigue, etc.

If only the eyes are a little sore, rest for a while to alleviate it, not necessarily dry eye disease; but if the rest is sufficient, still continue to appear these symptoms, you need to go to the hospital to check it, at this time you can buy eye drops, the right treatment, the improvement effect will be very limited.

Studies have shown that dry eye disease accounts for more than 60% of patients with ophthalmology [3], so many people get dry eye disease, in addition to long-term excessive use of the eye, these 7 conditions are often inseparable from the "interference":

Systemic diseases [1]: Dry eye is high in patients with Sjögren syndrome, post-transplantation, thyroid dysfunction, immune system diseases such as diabetes and gout, and endocrine system imbalances.

When the body has vitamin A deficiency, androgen deficiency, postmenopausal women, etc., it is also easy to lead to dry eye.

Ocular underlying diseases [4,5]: Local infections of the eye and immune-related diseases, such as infectious conjunctivitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and abnormal eyelid margin structure, are "regulars" for dry eye disease; in addition, eyelid skin and conjunctival laxity, eyelid spasm, and ocular acne can also easily lead to dry eye.

Environmental factors [1]: Dry eye is more likely to occur under conditions of air pollution, light pollution, radiation, high altitude, low humidity and strong winds.

Lifestyle [6-8]: Long-term viewing of computers and playing mobile phones, less outdoor activities, close-range flat fixed vision, lack of sleep, use of air conditioning, smoking, long-term wearing of corneal contact lenses, eye makeup and long-term driving are all related to dry eye syndrome.

After eye surgery [9,19]: Eye surgery, in which laser corneal refractive surgery and cataract removal result in a higher incidence of dry eyes, most patients recover 3 to 6 months after surgery, but a few patients have symptoms that last for a long time.

Drugs [10-13,17]: Includes systemic and topical medications. Systemic medications, such as antihistamines, contraceptives, systemic chemotherapy drugs and certain antidepressants, topical medications, such as eye disinfectants, antiviral drugs, antiglaucoma drugs and preservative-containing eye drops, eye ointments, etc.

Psychological and emotional [1]: Sometimes, emotions such as anxiety and depression can also lead to dry eyes.

If you have one of the above 7 conditions, you should pay attention to the changes in your eye health.

Dry eye is currently incurable and recurs easily, only relieving symptoms. Therefore, the best way is to prevent it. The following 4 ways to prevent it are very reliable:

Get enough sleep

Adults should ensure 8 hours of high-quality sleep per night, avoid excessive overtime, and let the eyes rest fully after a day of work. Because, poor sleep quality, can also cause and aggravate dry eye.

Avoid looking at electronic screens for long periods of time

Blinking can promote the secretion of tear fluid, moisten the eyes, and relieve the dryness of the eyes. When using electronic products, you should avoid focusing too much and causing the blinking frequency to decrease.

At the same time, we can reduce the time spent on a single sustained use, such as referring to the "202020" mantra, that is, watching the screen for 20 minutes, moving the eyes away to look 20 feet (about 6 meters) away, and insisting on it for more than 20 seconds [14].

Guarantee the humidity of the surrounding environment

Now the north has been heated, and the various heating tools of the small partners in the south have also been "ready to go".

However, whether it is heating, air conditioning or small sun, it will reduce the indoor humidity and aggravate the dryness of the eyes.

Therefore, in the heating process, do not pay attention to avoid facing the heating tool, and at the same time should use the humidifier in an appropriate amount to increase the indoor humidity and reduce the aggravation of dry eye.

Relieves unnecessary burden on the eyes

Wearing contact lenses for a long time, sleeping with contact lenses, inoculating eyelashes, tattooing eyeliner, and painting eye makeup will form a certain irritation to the eyes, which will cause dry eye symptoms.

fomentation

At home, you can prepare a towel slightly higher than the body temperature (40 to 45 degrees Celsius), close your eyes and apply it to your eyes for about 10 minutes each time, or you can choose a steam eye mask or a hot water cup to fumigate your eyes and blink your eyes while smoking. Hot compresses can help drain the secretions of the meibomian glands, which can be done several times a day, and the effect is very good.

Eat a balanced diet and pay attention to hygiene

Therefore, at the end of the year, we ourselves have taken the initiative to reduce the burden on the eyes. After all, healthy eyes are the most beautiful window of the soul
