Intel urges motherboard manufacturers to disable the 12th generation Core AVX 512 instruction set

IT House January 1 news, Intel has released the 12th generation Core Alder Lake desktop processor, for the first time with P + E size core architecture, of which P large core supports AVX 512 instruction set, while small core does not support. In the previous BIOS of the Z690 motherboard, users can turn on support for the AVX 512 instruction set to improve performance in specific applications.

Foreign media said that the removal of support for this instruction set is expected to be Intel's attempt to limit the application of civilian CPUs in the field of professional computing to distinguish them from workstation processors and server processors.

IT Home learned that although some of Intel's civilian processors support AVX 512 and AVX2 instruction sets, running such instruction sets will greatly increase CPU power consumption when running sub-score tests, and cannot run at full capacity for a long time. Intel's processors have the AVX2 throttling feature turned on by default, which strictly limits power consumption, but some asus motherboards provide a unlock option in the BIOS, allowing the processor to run AVX2 operations without limiting power consumption.
