You can take many trains through the United States, stopping at exciting cities, historic landmarks, and national parks along the way. From Napa Valley to New England, here are 10 of the best train travel routes in the country.
Please note that some of these routes have changed due to travel restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic, including previous routes to Canada. The other carriers listed have postponed their travel until 2021, so be sure to check availability before planning your trip.

A car crash occurred in the napa Valley Wine Train through the northeast of the Bay Area's picturesque wine country. The route extends north along a young railway line founded in 1864 to the resort town of Calistoga. Visitors can now make a three-hour, 36-mile round trip from downtown Napa to St. Helena. After getting on the bus at Mackinstree Street Station, cross the old industrial area of Napa and enter the wine country scenery. Hop on and off the train along the way and spend the night at one of the best hotels in Napa Valley.

Travel across the ocean on an Amtrak train through Southern California for 351 miles. Start from Santiago and head north, stopping at quaint ocean towns such as Carpinteria, San Juan Capistrano, and Ventura along the way. Be sure to set aside some time to explore Sao Barbara, or make your way to the end of San Luis Obispo and back.

Ride Amtrak's Coast Starlight up the edge of the West Coast, which stretches from Los Angeles to Seattle, passing through Santa Barbara, the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, and Portland. The scenery along the way includes the snow-capped peaks, forests and valleys of the Cascade and Shasta Mountains, as well as the long Pacific coastline.

The Grand Canyon Railroad, whose history dates back to 1901, offers passengers a lesson from the history of the Wild West and the chance to see the beautiful scenery of one of America's most famous regions. Ride in a restored car, listen to the folklore and stories of the staff, and admire the real people and musicians who brought the Old West to life. You can take a 65-mile rail ride across the High Desert Plateau to the Southern Rim.

The Amtrak Cascades crosses the northern border of the United States, stretching from Vancouver, Canada to Eugene, Oregon, passing through Portland and Seattle along the way. Stop in the city for a day trip or overnight stay, then take the train back, passing Mount St. Helens and crossing the Columbia River Gorge.

On your train journey from Alaska to Canada, take this historic railroad through the Yukon. This 67.5-mile journey takes you back and forth between Skaywell, Alaska, and Carcross, Canada, on the same route that Klondike stampedes took more than 100 years ago. Stop along the way to visit the historic Bennett Station and Museum.
Head to the top of the mountain at an altitude of more than 14,000 feet and take the Colorado Railroad Experience for a rail holiday that takes you through the Colorado Rocky Mountains on five standard and narrow gauge railways: the Georgetown Circle Railway, the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railway, the Cumbres and Toltek Scenic Railway, the Ledwell, Colorado and Southern Railroad, and the Canyon Royal Railway. Other highlights include the Garden of the Spectator Gods and the Royal Canyon Bridge and Park.

Hop aboard Amtrak's Maple Leaf train, starting at Niagara Falls and ending in New York City. Along the way, you'll travel through the scenic Hudson Valley, New York's Wine Country, and the canyons of the Finger Lakes region. While at Niagara Falls, you can stop aboard the Hornblower for a boat trip to the rushing falls, or take a waterfall tour that reaches a tunnel 150 feet underground that leads to an observation point at the foot of the falls.
