Tesla's wealth growth is largely due to the rapid expansion of its electric vehicle manufacturing business. Tesla's stock is up about 60 percent this year, and the company's market capitalization surpassed $1 trillion for the first time in October.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who topped the list earlier this year, fell to second place and his net worth is now $194 billion, an increase of just nearly $4 billion.

Bezos, 57, stepped down as Amazon's CEO in July and said he would spend more time on projects such as the Bezos Earth Fund, Blue Origin Spacecraft and The Washington Post.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates' fortune increased by $6.6 billion, ranking fourth in the world with $138 billion. While he has long since stepped down as chairman of Microsoft and has donated tens of billions of dollars to charities over the years, his wealth continues to grow, thanks in part to the excellent performance of Microsoft stock, where Gates holds about 1 percent of the shares.

Thanks to Alphabet's strong performance in 2021, Google founder Larry Page's net worth increased by $47 billion, making him in the top five worldwide with a fortune of $129 billion. He stepped down as CEO of Google's parent company Alphabet in 2019, but remains a member of the board.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, 37, the only member of the top 10 richest people under the age of 40, has increased his wealth by nearly $25 billion in the past year to $128 billion in total assets. Zuckerberg holds a 13 percent stake in Meta, the parent company of Facebook, and the company's market capitalization has grown by more than 26 percent this year.

Warren Buffett's wealth increased by $21.9 billion, and his net worth exceeded $110 billion. Buffett, 91, has pledged to donate all of his stake in Berkshire Hathaway to charity. In June, he said the target was halfway through.

Oracle co-founder and chairman Larry Ellison's wealth increased by $28.4 billion, and his net worth exceeded $100 billion. Oracle shares hit their second-highest gain in 20 years this year.

For most of the world's richest people, the vast majority of their net worth is stocks, whose earnings are driven by booming markets. As 2021 draws to a close, major U.S. stock indexes are nearing record highs this year, fueled by historic fiscal and monetary stimulus.
