TA: The EFL decided to cancel the matchday COVID-19 test to avoid the game being postponed at the last minute

The Athletic reported that the English Football Union EFL has decided to cancel the COVID-19 testing on matchday to avoid postponing the game at the last minute.

Lower leagues have been hit hard by the recent surge in COVID-19 cases. For example, on 29 December, there were only three Championship matches, four League One matches and two League One matches, and tonight there will be four Championship games and one League One. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the EFL League has now postponed 82 games this season. It is understood that in addition to players with COVID-19 symptoms, the previous requirement to have matchday testing on the morning of the match has been lifted. The decision was made by the EFL's medical advisers and team doctors at various clubs. However, they will continue to test players on a daily basis to stop the virus from spreading outside of matchday.

An EFL spokesperson said: "It has been clear over the past week that the requirement for matchday testing has caused a lot of concern and uncertainty at the club and has also seriously affected the fans of these teams. As a result, the league revisited the issue with its medical advisors and, after careful consideration, including conversations with a large number of club doctors, ultimately decided to cancel the requirement for a matchday COVID-19 test, with the exception of those with SYMPTOMS of COVID-19. On non-match days, clubs will continue their daily tests in accordance with the latest Red Accords, which is our biggest protection against the spread of COVID-19 in a football environment, and we will work together to get through this challenging and unprecedented period. ”

Recent delays include Swansea's match against Fulham due to an outbreak of infection in the home side. Understandably, the decision to cancel testing on matchday was made to prevent the match from being postponed before the start of the match. Therefore, this will help fans who are willing to go to the game site and reduce the risk of the game being cancelled on the way.
