The five heroes of Langya Mountain were well-known combat heroes in the Eighth Route Army during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, and their feats showed a high degree of revolutionary heroism and were deeply admired by the broad masses of the people. Their cliff-jumping feat was equally earth-shattering and ghostly, 7 years and 5 months earlier than the example of the Five Heroes of Wolf's Tooth Mountain.

At the beginning of April 1934, the front of the Southern Gate of the Central Soviet Region was besieged by heavy troops from the two divisions and one brigade of the Chen Jitang Department of the Kuomintang Southern Route Army, and the Main Force of the Red Army stationed at the Red Army, the Red 22nd Division, and more than 10,000 local armed people set up three lines of defense for defense. The Red 64th Regiment, which was acting as a frontal defender, stubbornly resisted the first line of defense along the fork of the Wucheng River, and was forced to retreat to the second line of defense, Pangu Pass, Longtou Blue House, and Panshan. The mountain is 30 miles away from the Yunmen Ridge, the terrain is complex, the mountain road is rugged, the terrain is dangerous, the main peak is winding the mountain in the shape of a millstone, and only one trail leads to the summit, forming a natural barrier to guard the forward position of the Yunmen Ridge.

In mid-April, the Kuomintang Cantonese army began a strong attack on Pangu Pass with the strength of the whole division and the whole regiment, 5 enemy planes bombarded the civil bunker fortifications built by our army in turn, and the heroic Red 64 Regiment relied on the terrain to hold its position and carried out a tenacious blockade for 3 days and 2 nights, while annihilating about 1 battalion of the enemy, the Red Army itself suffered heavy casualties. Due to the huge disparity in strength between the enemy and us, the main force of the Red 64th Regiment gradually retreated to the area of the third line of defense, Wushixia, Shegong Platoon, ZhaiNaojiao, and Junmen Lingxu.

The 6th Company of the 2nd Battalion of the Red 64th Regiment was tasked with covering the retreat at the Panshan position. Under the command of company commander Zhong Hongyi and instructor Cai Baolin, the Red 6th Company withstood the test of fierce battles again and again, crushing the enemy's attack. Just as the Red 6th Company was about to withdraw from its position, the enemy's platoon of artillery blew up the only path leading down the mountain, and the whole company was trapped to defend the main peak of Panshan Mountain.

At this critical juncture, Squad Leader Zhang Xiuliang climbed to the crossing: "Company commander, it is difficult for us wounded and sick to break through, so you should quickly lead your comrades to retreat from the back mountain." "No, we must withdraw together, we must be left dead!" The company commander and his comrades-in-arms replied, "If the comrades-in-arms do not break through, it will be too late." "Comrades retreat!" We cover up. Wang Wanyou and 31 other wounded came to Zhang Xiuliang's side to open fire on the enemy group, and the enemy rushed to the entrance of the passage. Company commander Zhong Hongyi and other soldiers tearfully tore the felt into strips and connected them, slid down the cliffs of more than 200 meters high in the back mountain, and successfully broke through. Zhang Xiuliang and other wounded soldiers in charge of the break a total of 32 people put life and death aside, after the ammunition ran out, the soldiers lifted the stones and smashed the enemy hard, when the ladder of the enemy's attack was extended, the soldiers did not hesitate to hold the ladder and jumped off the cliff more than 200 meters high, and the cliff echoed for a long time with the shouts of these heroic warriors who would rather die than yield, and the enemy was terrified.
