In 2016, Jiangsu officially launched the "Jiangsu Context Collation and Research Project", planning to spend 10 years to compile and publish 3,000 books to show the cultural roots of Jiangsu.
On December 30, 2021, the fourth batch of achievements of Jiangsu Bunko was held. So far, hundreds of experts and scholars have produced 740 books.
On the occasion of the press conference of the results, we interviewed the editors-in-chief of the sixth edition of Jiangsu Wenku to understand the story behind the compilation and publication with the public.
In this issue, we will interview Xu Xiaoyue, editor-in-chief of Jiangsu Bunko Bibliography, honorary director of Nanjing Library, and counselor of Jiangsu Provincial Government.
80,000 bibliographies have been sorted by category
How many ancient texts are there in Jiangsu Public Collection Institutions? What is their status? What version? These are all problems that need to be solved by the Jiangsu Classics in the "Jiangsu Library and Bibliography".

Xu Xiaoyue said that Jiangsu has a rich collection of ancient books, involving more than 100 units in multiple systems, with a total of about 4.5 million volumes. Coordinating and collecting bibliographic data on ancient books of public collection institutions in the province, while ensuring that each piece of data is objective and true, is the most basic and arduous task of the Bibliography. "This is also the first time in the history of Jiangsu that the most systematic, wide-ranging and deepest investigation and collation of ancient books has been carried out."
Xu Xiaoyue said that after years of hard work, a total of more than 250,000 ancient books and bibliographies from more than 100 units in the province have been collected, creating a new historical record for the existing ancient bibliographies of public collection institutions in Jiangsu Province. "The Bibliography is classified according to four categories: scripture, history, sub-collection, and collection. Due to the complexity of the ancient books, the highly professional catalog arrangement, and the fact that each ancient bibliography collected has to be reviewed many times, the compilation and publication work is meticulous and careful. ”
It is worth looking forward to that at present, the bibliographic compilation research team has accumulated 200,000 bibliographies. At the same time as the review was promoted, the classification and sorting was carried out, and 80,000 entries were completed.

From 2022 onwards, the "Jiangsu Classics collection" will hold out the ancient bibliography of the Jingbu, and from 2023 to 2025, according to the experience of the jingbu publishing, the publication of the history department, the sub-department and the collection department will be realized in batches. The scale of paper publication of the Bibliography can reach about 10 volumes.
"The completion of the Bibliography means that these ancient books have their own unique 'identity cards'. Each ancient book indicates its collection unit, the current status of the collection, the collection version, etc. Xu Xiaoyue told the Modern Express reporter.
Many precious ancient books have reappeared
Xu Xiaoyue said that in order to study and sort out the ancient books of Jiangsu public collection institutions, more than 100 ancient book practitioners and experts have successively devoted themselves to the study of bibliography compilation and collation, which has comprehensively promoted the cultivation of professional talents in the protection of ancient books in Jiangsu.
In the process of research and collation, many precious ancient books have reappeared. "We helped some public collection units discover precious ancient books that were not found before, and also found some ancient books that were marked as dead, and there were also undervalued ones, and we also re-identified their rank." According to Xu Xiaoyue, the late Ming bibliophile Ding Xiongfei's collection of poems, "The Diary of Frost Ship" and "The Remaining History of Qinhe Township", had previously been identified as deceased. This census of ancient books was found in the Wuxi Library and was able to see the light of day.
"If academic research is to go into the mountains to find treasures, then the bibliography is the way into the mountains." Xu Xiaoyue said that the Nanjing Library's leadership in compiling bibliographies is to build shortcuts for scholars in the vast number of ancient books, so that scholars can quickly find what they need in the vast sea of books. "The final formation of the province's ancient books bibliography not only fills the gap in Jiangsu's history, but also once again proves that Jiangsu's 'ancient books and provinces' have an orderly cultural heritage and helped Jiangsu build a culturally strong province."

Xu Xiaoyue told the Modern Express reporter that the Jiangsu context is a systematic research project, and the results of the Bibliography Compilation are not only reflected in the publication of paper documents, but also take this as a starting point to drive the development of Jiangsu's overall ancient book protection, including ancient book protection, ancient book digitization, ancient book collation and academic research, etc., to fully reflect the orderly inheritance of Jiangsu's cultural context.
He revealed that in 2022, Nanjing Library will cooperate with the Gu family of Guoyunlou to hold an exhibition of ancient books and calligraphy and paintings of "Guoyunlou". The exhibition is the first in-depth cooperation between public and private collections, which will further reflect the orderly and long-standing inheritance of Jiangsu's cultural context.
At the same time, Nanjing Library will continue to select the list of precious ancient books in Jiangsu Province. Promote the digital construction of ancient book protection in Jiangsu Province, and start the construction project of "Digital Resource Integration of Precious Ancient Books in Jiangsu Province". Linkage with the province's ancient book collection units to carry out special academic research. Held the provincial ancient book protection work conference and ancient book protection training course.
"Since the launch of the "Jiangsu Context and Bibliography Compilation", the Task is arduous and there is no precedent, and the Nanjing Library (Jiangsu Provincial Ancient Books Protection Center) has always been conscientious, constantly achieving various forms of breakthroughs and innovations, leading the ancient book collection units in the province to complete the phased tasks, with remarkable results. In the future, we will continue to face difficulties and strive to achieve greater research results in the next stage. Xu Xiaoyue said.
