British "Daily Express": Cocoa showed an effective lowering effect on blood pressure within 1 hour

【British "Daily Express" December 2021 article] Title: A brown drink can significantly reduce high blood pressure in 1 hour.

High blood pressure is a precursor to a range of life-threatening complications, including heart attacks and strokes. Even if high blood pressure cannot be completely reversed, minor lifestyle changes can help control high blood pressure, and a hot drink has been shown to have an effective lowering effect on blood pressure within 1 hour.

Different nutrient compounds can have different effects on diastolic and systolic blood pressure alone. Certain beverages, such as hot chocolate, have been shown to have a lowering effect on both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. In a study published in the West Indies Research Journal, researchers investigated the flavonoid levels of two cocoa products in an attempt to determine the effect of cocoa intake on blood pressure.

The experiment enrolled a total of 36 participants, of whom 19 had high blood pressure and 17 had normal blood pressure, all of whom recorded their blood pressure using an ambulatory blood pressure monitor for 3 days, every half hour for eight hours.

The results of the study showed that drinking only 1 cup of cocoa led to a significant decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure in patients with hypertension.

The researchers noted that the average drop in blood pressure was evidence of a drop within 1 hour of drinking cocoa drinks and lasted about 2.5 to 3 hours.

Changes in blood pressure in non-hypertensive populations are small and insignificant, and separate studies exploring the hypotensive effects of chocolate boiled the results to flavanols that promote vasodilation, which are very rich in flavonols in cocoa and have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Flavonol lowers blood pressure by promoting the formation of nitric oxide, which helps reduce the overall risk of cardiovascular disease. Although cocoa is a significant source of polyphenols, not all cocoa-containing products offer the same benefits, and pure cocoa is most beneficial for blood pressure because it contains the richest flavanols.

In addition, Swedish researchers found that due to its high concentrations of catechins and proanthocyanidins, dark chocolate can be as effective as drugs to lower blood pressure. To date, studies have shown that cocoa has a more pronounced blood pressure-lowering effect on patients with high blood pressure than in healthy people.
