At that time, the deputy commander-in-chief of the Kuomintang LuWansu was Li Changjiang, who was greedy for life and afraid of death, and who, coupled with the temptation of interests, actually defected to the Japanese, and in order to seek credit from the Japanese, Li Changjiang deceived the commanders of the columns under his command into a temple in Taizhou in the name of a meeting.
Li Changjiang immediately exposed his true face and forced these commanders to follow him to join the Japanese army, Chen Zhongzhu did not want to be a traitor, first pretended to agree, and escaped in the middle of the night after taking advantage of their lax defense, although Chen Zhongzhu escaped, but Taizhou fell.
At the same time, the Japanese army sent a large number of troops to search to find Chen Zhongzhu and others, after which Chen Zhongzhu concentrated the remaining soldiers of the fourth column and continued to fight with the Japanese army, they were surrounded by the Japanese army, Chen Zhongzhu first sent away his wife and daughter, and he led his troops to negotiate with the Japanese army.

What is more worth mentioning is that at that time, Wang Zhifang was pregnant with a child, and the Japanese army was impressed by her heroism, not only returned the head of General Chen Zhongzhu, but also bowed to Wang Zhifang to show admiration, and after retrieving her husband's head, Wang Zhifang buried her husband Chen Zhongzhu.
