Droplette, a beauty instrument brand that has been established for about a year, has completed a $15 million (about 95 million yuan) Series B financing.

Victress Capital and Spark Capital jointly led the investment, and Bolt Ventures and Amplifyher Ventures continued to follow suit. Funding will accelerate Droplette's entry into new markets, expand its end-to-end automated capsule manufacturing technology, and drive the development of new products and technologies.

In the eyes of Lori Cashman, managing partner of Victress Capital, Droplette has truly revolutionized skincare.

Droplette has created a device that can more effectively penetrate skincare products into the skin without the need for needles, and the Droplette beauty device is designed to target common skin problems by converting ingredients such as collagen, retinol and glycolic acid (a type of fruit acid) into a concentrated water mist that can be quickly delivered to the skin. This technology was named one of the "The 100 greatest innovations of 2021" by the famous American technology magazine Poppy Science.

Droplette was founded by two MIT-trained scientists, Madhavi Gavini and Rathi Srinivas. The earliest development of the device was to find a way to treat the hereditary skin disease Epidermolysis bullosa (EB), which manifests as very fragile skin and recurrent blisters due to daily minor friction.

Experts have been exploring ways to deliver drugs such as painkillers or antibiotics to the skin without pain, and have developed a technology that can convert beneficial therapeutic drugs into concentrated water mist and penetrate deep into the dermis layer of the skin.

The founders then realized that their technology was able to deliver the active ingredient directly into the skin. Thus, the Droplette beauty device was born.

According to a study by the European Food Safety Authority, 90% of topical skincare products are not absorbed by the surface of the skin. According to Droplette's website, only small molecules (less than 500 daltons) are absorbed. Many creams contain osmotic enhancers, an ingredient that destroys the stratum corneum in an attempt to get the molecules in (but often does more harm than good). When a person applies a cream or lotion to the skin, the only way for molecules to enter the interior is through diffusion, but diffusion is a slow process, and even if some products contain osmotic accelerators, the diffusion of the active ingredient is basically limited.

Therefore, in order to achieve the result that the active ingredient penetrates deep into the skin, the two elements of the Droplette beauty instrument device are the key - piezo and pump, which works by breaking down the active substance into a micro-mist, which is then sprayed into the skin at high speed. The implementation of this technique combines the physical principles of fluid dynamics, piezoelectric effects, and Fick's laws of diffusion.

Droplette's products are clinically proven and proven to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, acne, scarring and hyperpigmentation.

Droplette is mainly divided into the main body of the beauty instrument and active capsules containing different effects, the current brand has launched three kinds of capsules: 0.15% retinol, 10% collagen and 8.0% glycolic acid capsules, suitable for anti-aging, brush acid and other skin care needs. It is reported that next year, the brand will also launch capsules for skin problems such as redness and hyperpigmentation.

All capsules containing Droplette active ingredients are disposable and recyclable. In addition, all formulas are vegan, cruelty-free, fragrance-free and paraben-free.

In addition, Droplette monitors skincare performance: consumers can record long-term recipes and get expert advice from brands, and apps connected to their devices will light up every time they are used. The beauty kit is priced at $249 (RMB1600) and active capsules range from $39 to $79 (RMB252-511).

Ma Dawei, co-founder and CEO of Droplette, also said: "The painless delivery of ingredients to the skin is what makes Droplette a breakthrough technology. As the brand continues to grow and innovate, we are excited about the new and ongoing support from our investors. ”

According to brand profiles, Professors at Harvard and MIT, including Professor Samir Mitragotri, Dr. Rox Anderson and Dr. Leonard Miller, as well as dermatologists and plastic surgeons, have tested the product and served as scientific advisors to the brand.

Droplette has also received grants from NASA, the Walter Reed Army Research Institute, and the National Institutes of Health. The Walter Reed Army Research Institute is working with Droplette to optimize the equipment used to treat soldiers' explosive wounds.
