On January 11, a reporter from Chengdu Business Daily-Red Star News visited some vegetable markets, supermarkets and wholesale markets in Chengdu and found that the price of cherries was reduced by about 20% or 30%, of which the better varieties such as "three J" and "four J" cherries had a small decline.

Wholesalers: Good goods have declined less

At about 2 p.m. on January 11, some shops in the Sichuan Yurun International Agricultural Products Trading Center piled up a box of full bags of cherries, and some boxes of cherries were packed and ready to be loaded.

"This 'four hooks' of 500 yuan a box, 10 pounds, calculated down to 50 yuan a pound." A merchant selling cherries in the market, pointing to the whole bag of plastic packaging cherries in the carton, said that "several hooks" indicate the size of the cherry fruit diameter, and the cherry from large to small corresponds to "4J", "3J", "2J" and "J". Last year, the same "4J" wholesale price was about 550 yuan a box.

A bumper harvest is one of the reasons for the price reduction

This season, almost all domestic cherries are imported from Chile. "According to the information we have received, the increase in planting area and the good weather this year are the main reasons for this year's harvest of Chilean cherries." A wholesaler of cherries at the Sichuan Yurun International Agricultural Products Trading Center said that Chile's cherries have a bumper harvest and a large supply, and the price will naturally decrease. This year, it is said that production has increased by 30%, which sounds like a relatively large increase. But in fact, in recent years, the supply of Chilean cherries in the domestic market has risen by about 20%. Therefore, increasing production has a certain impact on prices, but it is not the only factor.

From November of the previous year to the end of the Lunar New Year, Chilean cherries will also have price fluctuations in this cycle. "At the beginning, the output is small, and it is transported by air; after the output rises, the price will be high and then low." The wholesaler explained that according to the experience of previous years, when the New Year is approaching, the market demand will increase, and the cherry will usher in a wave of rise. Overall, the price of cherries in winter will go through a process of rising from high to low.

"We think this is back to the normal price point, this wave of price cuts should have come a few years ago, before someone was speculating about the car, losing money and making money." An importer who supplies wholesalers in Chengdu said that after prices return to normal, the factors affecting prices will return to the most basic supply and demand relationship.
