In 1921, Hou Debang returned to China and served as the chief technician of the Yongli Alkali Company. At that time, soda ash was one of the most important industrial raw materials, but the alkali making technology was strictly monopolized by foreign companies, and domestic enterprises were completely blank in this regard.
After Hou De obtained a copy of the "Solvay alkali production method" information through a special channel, he immediately led the technical team to immerse himself in research. After five years of hard work, it has finally achieved success, independently produced high-quality soda ash, breaking the technical monopoly of foreign companies.
The Red Triangle brand soda ash produced by Wynn Company, with high quality and low price, defeated the famous "Bunemen" brand soda ash at the Philadelphia World Exposition in the United States and won the gold medal.
In 1934, Wynn Company began to produce nitric acid, ammonium sulfate and other fertilizers, and Hou Debang concurrently served as the director and chief engineer of the plant. After the beginning of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Wynn Company used its existing facilities and technology to switch to the production of strategic materials such as ammonium nitrate explosives to support the anti-Japanese front.
In 1937, the Japanese invaded China in an all-round way. At that time, the Japanese wanted to buy Hou Debang and the Yongli factory in Nanjing, but Hou Debang sternly refused. After that, Hou Debang immediately organized all parties to move the factory to Sichuan.
The main raw material for alkali production is table salt, but the concentration of well salt in Sichuan is too low, which needs to be concentrated before it can be used, and the cost is too high. Solvay's alkali production method wastes 30% of table salt. Hou Debang decided to explore new alkali production methods.
After repeated experiments, Hou Debang finally invented the "combined alkali production method". The new method not only increases the utilization rate of table salt to 96%, but also converts the pollutants produced in the production process of the original method into fertilizers, which greatly exceeds the advantages of Solvay's alkali production method.
The "combined alkali production method" was later named "Hou's alkali production method", which was the most advanced alkali production technology in the world at that time. Hou Debang himself also received the title of "National Treasure".
In April 1949, after the liberation of Nanjing, Hou Debang, who was in India, was very excited, overcame many obstacles, detoured back to China, and was reused. He not only held a leadership position in the Chemical Industry Department, but also served as the general manager of the public-private partnership Wynn Chemical Industry Company.
In 1972, Hou Debang became seriously ill. Although his body is incapacitated, he still goes down to the factory many times to inspect, discuss technical issues with scientific and technological personnel, and work hard for the country's chemical industry.
In August 1974, Hou Debang died of illness in Beijing at the age of 84.
