Biostimulants were first proposed by Spain's Gracium Mining Company in 1974 and did not attract industry attention at the time. In 1997, Zhang and Schmidt of Virginia Tech and State University redefined biostimulants: trace materials that promote plant growth. After 2012, the research and development application of biostimulants in agricultural production has become more and more extensive, with the in-depth research of countries around the world and the formulation of biostimulants standards by relevant international organizations, it is believed that the definition of biostimulants will be continuously improved and a unified standard will be reached.

At present, the more internationally recognized is the EU standard, in 2019, at the Fourth International Biostimulant Conference held in Barcelona, the European Biostimulant Industry Committee (EBIC) defined it as a material that contains certain substances or microorganisms, uses them in plant plants or their rhizospheres, and stimulates the natural processes of plants (such as improving plant nutrient absorption, nutrient utilization, abiotic stress resistance, and product quality).

Chitin is a renewable natural polymer substance that is widely found in shrimp crabs and crustaceans, and is second only to plant fibers in nature. The deacetyl, calcium and deprotein products of chitin are chitosan, of which chitosan derivatives - chitosan oligosaccharides are often used for foliar spraying due to their good water solubility and easy absorption.

Chitin and chitosan derivatives, as a kind of biostimulant for plants, are currently mainly used to regulate soil colony balance, improve plant tolerance and immune response to abiotic stress, and improve crop quality. Because of its good degradability, non-toxicity, induced disease resistance, biocompatibility, etc., it has a wide range of uses in agriculture.

Liu Jinfeng et al. studied the effects of chitin on tomatoes against high temperature and Cabbage against severe cold, and the results showed that after tomato and Chinese cabbage were treated with chitin, the malondialdehyde content and electrolyte penetration decreased significantly, and the proline content increased, thereby improving the high temperature resistance of tomatoes and the cold resistance of Chinese cabbage. Chitosan oligosaccharide is a degradation product of chitosan, as a new marine biological source attractant, due to its special function of bacteriostatic properties and growth promotion, the development speed will be faster in agricultural applications.

At the experimental base of Hainan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Lei Fei et al. sprayed different concentrations of chitosaccharides on the leaf surface of cherry tomatoes to study the effects of chitosan oligosaccharides on crop growth and disease resistance. The results showed that compared with the control group without treatment, foliar spraying of chitosan oligosaccharides with appropriate concentrations of cherry tomatoes could promote plant growth and increase leaf photosynthetic rate, increase plant height, and significantly reduce leaf incidence. In addition, the results showed that when foliar spraying of chitosan oligosaccharide solution with a mass concentration of 450 mg/L, the yield and quality of cherry tomatoes were higher, and the corresponding disease index and its growth rate were also lower.
