Origins: The impulse to write for the city and its contemporaries
The reason they wrote this book is their long-standing interest in China's forty years of social change — "this change is fast and dramatic, and it always needs a context."
A class reunion after a lapse of thirty years gave Yi Jianfeng the impulse to write for the city and his contemporaries: "This generation is the beneficiary of China's four decades of reform and opening up, and they live in a complicated situation in Shenyang in this process - from the most important industrial city in the era of planned economy to a laggard, there is a strong sense of loss." ”
The protagonists of this book, Dr. Zhang and Dr. Wang, are Yi Jianfeng's junior high school classmates, and they are all well-known professionals today, and they were also born into working families. They were from the 1970s, living in Shenyang, and various factors superimposed to form the author's original intention to write this book.
The authors interviewed two doctors and their family members to observe the ups and downs and changes of ordinary people in the big times. They argue that the generation born in the 1970s constitutes an excellent sample for interpreting the changes in Chinese society over the past four decades.
Writing: Interviewing dozens of people and recreating the past in their memories
The two authors interviewed dozens of people, recreating the past in old newspapers, old photographs, architectural ruins and oral memories, outlining the growth and class leap of the two in half a lifetime. At the same time, it also takes factors such as industrial cities, unit society, scarcity economy, working class culture, masculinity, major historical events and changes of the times as the longitude and latitude, presenting a contemporary northeast with both depth and breadth.
The division of labor of the book, Yang Ying is responsible for the interview; the first, third, fourth and sixth parts, written by Yi Jianfeng, and the second, fifth, seventh and eighth parts, written by Yang Ying. In the end, it was drafted by Yi Jianfeng.
"In the process, I felt more than I felt in the twenty years I have lived in Shenyang." Yi Jianfeng said of the difficulty of writing: "The content covered in this book is too vast, and we didn't know how to deal with such a rich material at first. ”
Yang Ying said: "These forty years are the most drastic changes in China, and they are also the only forty years in the world, these forty years will change a lot of things, and things called 'destiny' will act on everyone." Yi Jianfeng said: "In fact, there are many things, when you don't pay too much attention, it has changed dramatically." ”
