After the outbreak of the Battle of Yuxianggui, Tang Enbo held hundreds of thousands of heavy troops but fled without a fight, and many towns in Henan fell into the hands of the enemy, and the Battle of Xuchang broke out in this context. In May 1944, the Japanese Kou dispatched more than 20,000 people to launch a fierce attack on Xuchang, and the troops guarding Xuchang were the new 29th Division of the Nationalist Army, although the whole division had 3 regiments under its jurisdiction, but the total strength was only more than 3,000 people, which was about the same size as a brigade. Faced with the unfavorable situation in which the enemy was strong and we were weak, division commander Lü Gongliang and deputy division commander Huang Yonghuai were not afraid and led their troops to launch a bloody battle with the Japanese army.

Huang Yonghuai is a native of Anyue, Sichuan, and graduated from Huangpu Phase 5. After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, Huang Yonghuai served as the commander of the 524th Regiment of the 88th Division and participated in the Battle of Songhu with the troops. During the battle, Huang Yonghuai led the whole regiment to launch a fierce attack on the right wing of the Hongkou District where the main force of the Japanese army was located, and with the cooperation of the artillery, successively captured the Wuxi Cemetery, the Yuedong Middle School, and the Japanese Navy Playground. During the battle, Huang Yonghuai took the lead as a soldier, charged into the battlefield, bravely killed the enemy, and wrote a poem that read, "Stepping on the snow and hatred of the three islands, dismissing officials and returning to farming for a long time", the morale of the whole regiment was greatly encouraged.
After that, Huang Yonghuai led his troops to garrison Baoshan and Wusong, and repelled several Japanese attacks, during the battle, Huang Yonghuai was hit by enemy bullets, seriously wounded, and was sent to the hospital for treatment. His post was succeeded by Lieutenant Colonel Chief of Staff Xie Jinyuan. After Xie Jinyuan arrived, he immediately led his troops into the Sixing Warehouse and became a national hero with a reputation at home and abroad, but Huang Yonghuai missed this opportunity due to injury. After recovering from his wounds, Huang Yonghuai participated in many battles and was promoted to deputy division commander for his merits.
On May 29, 1943, the Battle of Xuchang broke out, and the Japanese Nagano Division launched a fierce attack on Xuchang from the north, south and west. Although the difference between the enemy and our troops was very large, the officers and men of the whole division fought with the same enemy and did not retreat from the battle, and at about 6 p.m. on the 30th, the Japanese Kou attacked the city with powerful firepower, and Huang Yonghuai led his troops and the Japanese army to launch a fierce street battle. By dawn on the 31st, there were only a few hundred officers and men left in the division. Huang Yonghuai and the division commander Lü Gongliang decided to lead the troops to break through, and during the breakthrough, Lü Gongliang was killed in battle, and Huang Yonghuai's left leg was injured by the Japanese artillery battle, and unfortunately he was captured.
After Huang Yonghuai was captured, rikou prepared to escort him to Yuzhuang. On the way, Huang Yonghuai witnessed the various atrocities of the Japanese army, and was furious, he took advantage of the enemy's lack of attention, suddenly grabbed a pistol from a Japanese officer, killed 5 Japanese on the spot, and then raised his gun to commit suicide, only 42 years old. After Huang Yonghuai's sacrifice, the Nationalist government posthumously recognized him as a major general in the army in recognition of his merits.
