【Visser anecdote】The birth of The Violin Competition of Wieniawski

Henrik Wieniawski (July 10, 1835 – March 31, 1880) is considered one of the greatest violinists in history. He was born in Lublin, the Kingdom of Poland, which belonged to the Russian Empire at that time, to Jewish parents. Henrik's playing talent was recognized early on. At the age of 8, he was admitted to the Paris Conservatory, studied with the master Lambert Massart, and published his first work, GrandCaprice Fantastique Op.1, at the age of 12. In 1860, Henrik met the love of his life, Isabella Hampton. But her parents opposed them being together. So Henrik created "Légende" Op.17 dedicated to his lover. The work also caused her parents to change their minds, and the lovers eventually became dependents.

At the invitation of Anton Rubinstein, Wieniawski moved to St. Petersburg from 1860 to 1872, where he led the orchestra and string quartet of the Russian Music Association. From 1872 to 1874, Wieniawski toured the United States with Rubinstein. In 1875, Wieniawski became professor of violin at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels. During his stay in Brussels, Wieniawski's health deteriorated. In 1879, he was taken to the hospital after a concert. In 1880, Wieniawski died of a heart attack in Moscow and was buried in the Bovatsky Cemetery in Warsaw.
