The Story of the Romans (4) The auspicious god Querinus

Rome had seven hills, and the flat ground between the hills was one wetland after another.

Now the Italian presidential residence is located in the Quirierno Hill, and the Italian Ministry of the Interior is in Vimina Hill, so when we watch TV, we rarely hear reports from the presidential residence, from the Ministry of the Interior, but from Mount Quirierno, from Mount Vimina.

In the story we told earlier about the she-wolf feeding the baby, the princess's twin babies are Romulus and Remus. One of them was chosen as king, and eventually Romulus killed his brother to become king, and Rome was named after the builder Romulus, and history began to enter an era of separation from myth and legend.

Romulus chose palatine hill, built walls, and held a solemn ceremony to offer sacrifices to the gods, on April 21, 753 BC, the anniversary of the founding of Rome.

This year, Romulus was 18 years old.

After the founding of Rome, Romulus did not monopolize power, he divided the state into three institutions, namely the king, the senate and the council of citizens, and these three parties jointly governed Rome.

The King, elected by a general assembly of citizens.

The Senate, which gathered 100 elders, was responsible for giving advice and advice to the king.

Citizens' Assembly: Composed of all the citizens of Rome, the task was to elect government officials at all levels, headed by the king.

The Council of Citizens did not have the power to formulate policies, but had the right to vote for or against the policies formulated by the king after heeding the advice of the Senate. In addition, in foreign relations, war or peace must be carried out with their consent.

This was the basic form of the state at the beginning of the founding of Rome. On the one hand, it was in line with the conditions of Rome at that time, but at the same time it was also a simple and perfect, very effective form of government that could be applied to the future.

So who were Romulus involved in the founding of Rome?

In the previous story, the twin brothers were raised by she-wolves, adopted by sheep, and led by sheep and farmers when they revolted to save their mothers, all of whom were Latins.

However, the vast majority of these people were single men, and after the establishment of the polity, the second major thing Romulus set out to do was to plunder the women of other nationalities.

The book speculates that Romulus and his subordinates were probably driven out by the original tribes.

Because normal tribal migrations should take wives and children with them, and in order to whitewash history, the Romans made up the story of Aeneas's travels, saying that he was the child of Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, and at the same time a Trojan warrior, and also tied him to Romulus.

As mentioned above, the first thing Romulus did after the founding of the country was to find a partner for the Roman people, and instead of playing cards according to common sense and holding a blind date, he turned a corner and invited the nearby Sabines to participate in the sacrifice.

The Sabine people felt that fighting was forbidden on the day of sacrifice, and it was not impossible to go out to visit the festivals of ethnic minorities, so all of them went out to Rome to visit, and they did not expect that when the activities were having fun, the Romans began to rob the relatives.

The Sabines were defenseless and very angry, and they strongly demanded that Rome return the stolen girl. Romulus not only refused, but also took the lead in holding a wedding, telling the other party that the Romans would marry these girls.

The Sabines were so faceless that the two sides went to war, with four great battles and three victories for the Romans.

For the last time, the Sabine woman who was snatched by the Romans suddenly broke into the battlefield, killing each other between her own family and her new husband, making them unable to watch, raw rice has been cooked to maturity, although they were robbed, they were also dignified wives, and even harvested love.

So the two sides shook hands and made peace.

Romulus proposed that the two tribes merge and welcome their families to move to Rome, but the Sabines actually lost three times and were already self-aware, willing to merge with the strong, and gladly agreed.

The Story of the Romans (4) The auspicious god Querinus

The combined Rome was ruled by two kings.

The Sabines enjoyed exactly the same rights as the Romans, had the right to vote, and elders could enter the Senate. Thus, Rome assimilated the conquered by snatching girls and grew its power for the first time.

King Sabine was soon killed in battle, and Romulus began a 37-year reign.

In the 39th year, one day, Romulus was reviewing the army. Suddenly the sky was cloudy and a storm poured in, and when the rain cleared, the king's seat was empty, and there was no sign of Romulus anywhere. So there were rumors that the king had been summoned to heaven by the gods and decided to recognize Romulus as the father of the Roman state, the auspicious god of the Romans, Quirinus.
