So far this season, Irving has refused to be vaccinated and has not yet played. In the playoffs last season, Porzingis did not perform well, and he was put on the shelf by the Lone Ranger. But after a turn, the Lone Ranger found that Porzingis had no trading value, and eventually had to be intervened by the boss Cuban to personally reassure Porzingis, saying that he had never considered sending him away. The new Lone Ranger coach Kidd also personally traveled to Latvia to visit Porzingis' home.
In this offseason, Porzingis has said that he has been rid of injuries and will have a new performance in the new season. But so far this season, Porzingis has played in 20 games, averaging 19.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game, shooting 45% from the field and only 29.7% from three-point range, falling to his worst career. The Mavericks are currently tied for 7th place in the West End with 14 wins and 13 losses.
The Lone Ranger has been trying to bring in a star point guard lately, having chased Lowry before and now eyeing Irving. It also means that Doncic may change positions and play the number three instead. After all, in the rookie season, Doncic played as a small forward with 21% of his playing time. The Lone Ranger hopes to bring in star point guard partner Doncic, which is also a change of tactical thinking.
