Milan's winter window complements the Ligue 1 champion defender, and Chelsea may therefore stay in the defensive core for a long time

Milan's interest in Lille centre-back Botmann is good news for Chelsea, with the Rossoneri hoping to build a stable defensive system. Botman is part of The Lille backline, having unexpectedly won the Ligue 1 title last season and are expected to sell for €30 million, given his current momentum in France. If no deal is reached in January – which is something that takes into account the possibility of Ligue 1 powerhouses making surprising progress in the Champions League round of 16 – then this will certainly be reached in the summer. In fact, the young Dutchman is now considered Milan's best candidate for defense.

This is good news for Chelsea, who hope to retain their existing talent. The Blues have a lot of players in the summer who will face contract expiry. If the two veterans, Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva, end up leaving, the young centre-back combination of Rudiger and Christensen will be even more indispensable. Rudiger is likely to leave the squad to join Real Madrid, while contract talks with Christensen appear to have stopped, increasing the Chances of the Danish international leaving. Milan are ready to take advantage of his delicate contract status quo to offer him an offer, but as the Rossoneri begins to focus on Botman, they appear to have given up hopes of getting the Danish star.

Milan are keen to get a defender in January as determined Kyal has been injured for a long time and they have apparently given up hope of luring Chelsea to sell the Dane. San Siro have already stolen one of the Blues' most promising defenders, deciding to buy out after going on loan to Tomori last summer. The young Briton's performance in Serie A has been impressive. Still, Chelsea won't see Christensen following in Tomori's footsteps to Milan – at least in January.
