Nippon Power Corporation and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have developed a project plan to accelerate the decarbonization of Indonesia's power sector.

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), Japanese energy giant JERA, TEPCO Power Grid and Japan's Tokpo Design Co., Ltd. (TEPSCO) have agreed to jointly conduct a data collection survey on the decarbonization of Indonesia's power industry.

The four companies established a new joint venture to smoothly deliver the project from November 2021 to March 2022. The project focuses on the collection and analysis of data on current Singapore electricity market trends and future prospects.

The Indonesian government made a commitment in the June 2021 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to reach the goal of carbon neutrality by 2060, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency wants to help Indonesia achieve this goal. At present, Indonesia is the largest consumer of electricity in the ASEAN, accounting for almost 40% of the electricity consumption of ASEAN countries.

The agency will finance the power company's project plans to help Indonesia reduce its reliance on coal-fired power generation and phase out conventional energy generation plants. Nippon Power wants to help Indonesia meet its goal of generating 23 percent of renewable electricity by 2025 and fewer new coal-fired power plants by 2030.

The plan also points out that although Indonesia's electrification level has been steadily increasing, its electricity demand is also rising, which is not only detrimental to Indonesia's adoption of smart energy solutions, but also slows down the decarbonization process.

Therefore, the Nippon Power Company's proposal will help Indonesia reduce greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation, while playing a key role in ensuring the security of electricity supply.

Each of the four companies will present another plan for Indonesia's carbon neutrality.

TEPCO will serve as project leader, researching power development and demand, while TEPCO will study power-related policies, regulations, and financial and economic issues related to decarbonization, as well as project management and project operations.

Japanese energy giant JERA will serve as assistant project leader to study low-carbon and decarbonized thermal power generation solutions, and Japan's TEPCO Design Co., Ltd. will study the energy transmission network and further optimize it to deliver more renewable energy.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency will also carry out in-depth cooperation with the four companies to jointly implement the decarbonization plan.

TEPCO will contribute its own experience in building and implementing power transmission and distribution networks; TEPCO will share institutional and financial expertise; Japanese energy giant JERA will share its experience in developing zero-carbon project plans for overseas companies; and Toyo Design Co., Ltd. will provide related energy consulting services and high-tech services.

At the COP26 Summit in Glasgow, the Indonesian government signed an agreement with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), which Indonesia will leverage its expertise and resource network to accelerate the energy transition.

Indonesian Energy Minister Mr. Arifen Taslif Arifin Tasrif) said of the agreement: "Indonesia has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 29% by 2030 and has also set an ambitious target of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2060 or earlier, with the support of international organizations."

"However, indonesia still has a lot to do in terms of project policy, technology and funding flows, and it also needs the relevant technical support of other countries and international renewable energy agencies and other international organizations." We look forward to further strengthening cooperation to prepare indonesia for energy transition. ”
