Chief designer of the Beidou-3 system satellite: Disruptive innovation should focus on the real needs of the country

On December 10, Lin Baojun, deputy director of the Shanghai Microsatellite Engineering Center, deputy chief designer of the manned space engineering application system, and chief designer of the first star of the new generation of Beidou navigation satellites, said at the 2021 "Spread the Spirit of the Nobel Prize, Build a New City of the Future" Youth Science and Technology Innovation Forum held in the Lingang New Area of the Shanghai Free Trade Zone that the real subversive and innovative thinking is not to think about what I have and what I am doing, but what the country really needs to solve now. "It doesn't matter if other people don't do it, I started from 0 and did it little by little, and then you look back and find that pulling everyone behind, this is disruptive innovation." 」 He said that if the research and development of Beidou navigation satellites is free-ridden, today's Beidou will not reach the world's first-class indicators.

Ma Dawei, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, researcher of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and director of the State Key Laboratory of Life Organic Chemistry, mentioned at the forum that there is a "free ride" phenomenon in the research and development of science and technology. "In the subversive innovation of science and technology, people say that we hitchhiking and we have to admit it." Ma Dawei said that China's real scientific and technological research has gone through decades, and it is difficult for foreign countries to hitch a ride on our free ride. But he said that the next few decades are very important, and one of the keys to whether China can truly stand in the world's forest is whether we can produce a batch of disruptive innovations and make the world recognize that we have the ability to make science and technology that changes the world.

Lin Baojun said that the traditional way of thinking in scientific research is to hitchhike, "what do I have, on this basis, what can be obtained in the short term." He said that the general practice of scientific research topics now is, "First look at what Chinese are doing, what the Europeans are doing, what the Americans are doing, find out what the gap with the United States is after figuring it out, find the key technology after finding the gap, and shorten the gap." ”

Lin Baojun said that this kind of extended line of scientific research ideas can continue to make achievements, but it can not get subversive innovation, and it will never surpass others. The thinking that can really produce disruptive innovation is not to think about what I have and what I am doing, but what the country really needs to solve now.

"People are inert and want to go the way they are, but if they really want to make a breakthrough, they must look at what the real needs of the country are, what the essential laws of objective things are, and do it according to the needs and laws." It doesn't matter if others don't do it, I start from 0 and do it little by little, and then you look back and find that pulling everyone behind, this is disruptive innovation. Lin Baojun said that if the research and development of Beidou navigation satellites is free-rider, today's Beidou will not reach the world's first-class indicators.

Chief designer of the Beidou-3 system satellite: Disruptive innovation should focus on the real needs of the country

Lin Baojun has been the chief designer of the Beidou-3 satellite since 2011, comprehensively presided over the development of navigation satellites, led the team to overcome dozens of core key technologies, solved many problems in the expansion of the Beidou system from the region to the world, and organized the development and deployment of 12 Beidou navigation satellites, of which 4 groups of 8 satellites were launched at high density in 2018.

Lin Baojun said that at that time, when doing the Beidou satellite, the satellite was a few tons in weight at the beginning, and the best devices in the world were used. "When we do Beidou, we have to use our own devices, but also to reduce the weight, at that time I thought, using the traditional method can't work."

Later, the team first proposed and realized the "functional chain design concept", comprehensively broke the previous subsystem design ideas, divided according to the functional chain, and realized the integrated design of the platform payload from the essence, and completed the optimization and integration of various resources inside the satellite to the greatest extent, the beidou-3 first satellite was only 847.6 kg, and the small satellite realized the ability of the large satellite.

The commanding heights of navigation technology is time frequency, and the spaceborne hydrogen atomic clock developed in China has better accuracy, medium- and long-term stability and drift rate, which is more conducive to autonomous navigation operation, and the stability is nearly an order of magnitude higher than GPS. The world's first ka phased array inter-satellite link to achieve "one-star, star-to-star", based on the domestic station to achieve global constellation management, the MEO orbit coverage increased from 30% to 100%. The satellite "heart" uses the domestic Loongson CPU, and the core components such as domestic FPGAs, domestic ASICs, and microwave devices with loads are independently controllable, completely reversing the situation that the key components of the satellite rely on imports and are subject to people.

In 2018, 8 Beidou-3 satellites were intensively launched, which strongly supported the opening of global services. "Our team of less than 100 people launched 8 long-lived, reliable business stars a year, which created China's Beidou speed, China's aerospace miracle, and the world's aerospace miracle." Lin Baojun said that the next step is to solve the problem of Beidou navigation in deep space, indoor and underwater, and build a more ubiquitous, more integrated and more intelligent integrated PNT system.

He also mentioned that at that time, these research and developments were also questioned, and they had not been done abroad, could we do it? Lin Baojun said, "To truly believe in yourself, building self-confidence is the most important thing, if you don't take responsibility, these things can't be done." ”

The Youth Science and Technology Innovation Forum is the third science and technology innovation forum with the theme of "Spreading the Spirit of the Nobel Prize and Building a New City of the Future" held in Lingang New Area, hosted by the People's Government of Nanhui New Town, and supported by the Shanghai Pudong New Area Education Bureau, the Pudong New Area Science and Technology and Economic Committee, and the Pudong New Area Science and Technology Association. Exchanges and discussions were held on how young people should cultivate the thinking and awareness of scientific and technological innovation, what kind of spirit is the spirit of scientists, and how the whole society should create an ecosystem for youth science and technology education and promote the growth of young people.
