The play is based on a 1983 novel by Walter Tevez. In the late 1950s, young Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) was abandoned and entrusted to an orphanage in Kentucky. She has an amazing talent for chess and is addicted to the sedatives provided to children by the government. Haunted by the demons of her own heart, Beth is transformed into an impressive, skilled, and charismatic outcast under the combined effects of drugs and obsession, determined to break the traditional boundaries established by the male-dominated chess world.
