In the Korean battlefield in the autumn of 1952, the volunteer army and the Korean People's Army won a full linear tactical counterattack operation, and in order to gain the initiative in the armistice negotiations and get rid of the passive situation on the battlefield, the US military launched an attack on the 597.9 highland and the 537.7 highland North Mountain in the Shangganling area.
Shangganling is located in a valley southeast of the Five Saints Mountain. The Five Holy Mountains are 1061.7 meters above sea level, which is a natural barrier and a strategic point in the central part of our army, which can defend the main road from Jincheng to the southeast coast to the east; it can attack the Jinhua area occupied by the enemy to the south, but if the Five Holy Mountains are lost, it will be difficult for our army to gain a foothold in the middle line area in the future, and may even lose control of the entire battlefield.
The strategic position of the Five Holy Mountains is extremely high, and the most important highlands are the 597.9 and 537.7 highlands on the left and right sides. By holding these two hills, the enemy could not threaten the five holy mountain defenses in the rear. When the comrades-in-arms came to position No. 3, they only saw the trench where Hu Xiudao was located, full of white ropes and countless shell casings, full of black dust, hats and clothes on their bodies were all holes, but the miracle was that the body was not injured at all, like a divine soldier descending from heaven! According to the statistics of the observation post, Hu Xiudao and his comrades repelled a total of 41 attacks by the US army and the South Korean army that day, and Hu Xiudao killed more than 280 enemy troops in one day, successfully holding the position!
After the war, on January 15, 1953, Shiji gave Hu Xiudao a special meritorious service and awarded him the title of "First Class Combat Hero of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army". On June 25, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea awarded him the title of "Hero of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea" and awarded him the National Flag Medal and the Gold Star Medal of the First Class.
After awarding such a high honor, Hu Xiudao said: "This honor does not belong to individuals, it belongs to those volunteer soldiers who sacrificed, and I am very lucky to survive." In 1985, when the army was compiled, Hu Xiudao, regardless of personal honor and disgrace, retired to the second line, bowed down at his post and continued to serve the people, and in 1988, Hu Xiudao retired from the post of deputy chief of staff of the 12th Group Army.
In March 2002, Hu Xiudao died in Nanjing at the age of 71.
