Two local residents said the fire occurred before dawn. Bazom Banza did not say why the fire occurred.

According to NBC News, in a statement on Twitter, Burundi's Ministry of the Interior said that the cause of the fire was a short circuit. At least 38 prisoners were confirmed dead and at least 59 others injured. Photos released by the Ministry of the Interior showed a fire truck parked outside the prison.

A local resident who rushed to the prison while the fires were still raging told Reuters that many of the dead were elderly inmates. He said he saw the body being carried away from the scene by ambulance.

In August, there was also a fire at the prison, which authorities said was caused by a circuit problem. There were no casualties at the time.
