　　As one of the winners of the Holcim Global Sustainable Architecture Awards, PowerHYDE Housing, designed by Prasoon Kumar and Robert Verrijt of Billion Bricks India and Singapore, explores sustainable design approaches that provide growth opportunities for the homeless in Southeast Asia.

　　The BillionBricks community is the world's first negative carbon solar residential community dedicated to lifting families out of poverty within a generation. It represents an extraordinary opportunity to shape our future world, where everyone can own their own housing while mitigating climate change. 　　According to the United Nations, the demand for housing is increasing dramatically, with more than 1.8 billion people in need of adequate housing today. By 2050, more than 3 billion people worldwide will need access to affordable housing. Our current approach is clearly a failure. Together, buildings and construction account for more than a third of global energy consumption and nearly 40% of total direct and indirect CARBON dioxide emissions. If we want to solve the housing problem with minimal externalities, we also need to solve the energy and climate challenges.

　　What is the BillionBricks Community?

　　The BillionBricks community is a three-bottom-line solution that combines clean energy and social housing into a financially viable business proposition. The BillionBricks community will generate excess solar energy and sell it through ppus agreements, providing significant funding for the project. In addition to residences, it provides an ecosystem of education, employment, healthcare and recreational facilities. The goal of the BillionBricks community is to lift families out of poverty within a generation and help them reach lower middle income levels.

　　BillionBricks Residences are plug-and-play modular homes that do not require any service facilities and are ready for immediate use from the day they are built. Not only can they produce their own energy, but they can also collect 100% rainwater, purify sewage, and grow their own food. Future BillionBricks homes will be combined with smart technology to significantly improve their performance. BillionBricks residences have a strong modern feel, can be adapted to the needs of the community, and can be scaled up or down.

　　The First Steps project team has recently completed the first prototype of the BillionBricks residence. It was built in the village of Mathjalgaon in India and is owned by the Dokhale family. They have lived here since October 2019 after years without housing. There are also two Billion Bricks residences in the Philippines that have been built and are in use. The designers are currently planning a community of 500 residences near Manila, Philippines, which will generate 10MW of electricity.
