Spain's annual new car sales may reach 855,000 new energy vehicles

In November, the number of new car registrations in Spain was 66,399 units, down 21% month-on-month, down 12% from the same period in 2020, and significantly down 29% from the same period in 2019; from January to November, Spain's new car sales overall increased by 3.8% to 773396 units. Despite the decline in November sales figures, there are some signs of optimism. Auto dealership group Faconauto said dealers have received more than 100,000 customer orders that will translate into new car registrations in 2022. GANVAM, the Spanish dealers association, also revealed that new car sales in 2021 may be 855,000 units, 0.5 percentage points higher than last year's 851211.

It is worth mentioning that compared with the double-digit decline in the traditional power vehicle market, the sales volume of pure electric vehicles increased by 48% year-on-year, and the market share also rose from 2.5% in November last year to 4.2%, and this proportion also reached a peak of 4.9% in September this year.

Among them, the sales of new cars for individual users fell by 11% to 34,436 units; the sales volume of corporate users fell by 12% to 28,733 units; and the sales volume of leasing companies fell by 23% to 3230 units.

Despite the decline in November sales figures, there are some signs of optimism. "Consumers are gradually realizing that they have to wait for longer delivery times for new cars due to chip shortages." Auto dealership group Faconauto said dealers have received more than 100,000 customer orders that will translate into new car registrations in 2022. Another industry group, the Spanish Dealers Association GANVAM, also revealed that new car sales in 2021 may be 855,000 units, 0.5 percentage points higher than last year's 851211.

It is worth mentioning that Peugeot was the most popular brand in November, with sales of 5797 units, Hyundai ranked second with 5725 units, and Toyota ranked third with 5439 units. Volkswagen's Spanish sub-brand SEAT sold only 3,817 vehicles, ranking eighth, but in terms of sales in the first 11 months, Seat remained the best-selling brand in Spain.

The Dacia small hatchback Sandero was the most popular model in November, with 2,264 units sold, followed by the compact SUV, the Tucson, and the small crossover Peugeot 2008 in the top three.

Specifically, the sales performance of major automobile groups in November:

Sales of Volkswagen, the core brand of the Volkswagen Group, fell by 28 percent, while sales at Seat and Skoda fell by 37 percent and 35 percent, respectively. Due to insufficient semiconductor supply, volkswagen's main plant in Wolfsburg, Germany, which produces the best-selling compact hatchback Golf, has been shut down several times this year. The data shows that golf sales fell by 55% in November.

At Stellantis Group, Peugeot sales fell 4.5 percent, Opel down 28 percent, Fiat's sales fell 22 percent, and Jeep's sales fell 12 percent.

Ford sales fell 40 percent, Renault sales fell 16 percent, Dacia sales fell 7.9 percent, and Nissan fell 23 percent.

Among the high-end brands, Mercedes-Benz sales fell by 41%, bmw and Audi both fell by 22%.

Focus on the new energy vehicle market. Sales of pure electric vehicles rose sharply by 48% year-on-year, and the market share also rose to 4.2% from 2.5% in November last year, and this proportion also reached a peak of 4.9% in September this year; the market share of plug-in hybrids was 6.6%, down from 7.1% in October, but up from 4% in November 2020; and the sales of full hybrids increased by 22%, and the market share rose from 20.2% in November 2020 to 28.2%.

Specific to the model, the Tesla Model 3 was the most popular electric car in Spain in November, with 248 units sold, followed by the Peugeot 208 and Kia Niro. Looking at sales in the first 11 months of the year, the Model 3 is the most popular electric vehicle, with 2420 new car registrations, ahead of Niro and Renault Zoe.

In contrast, sales in the traditional power car market were flat. Gasoline-powered vehicle sales fell 18 percent to a market share of 40.8 percent, down 2.8 percentage points from September 2020, while diesel-powered vehicle sales fell 42 percent to 18.4 percent, down 9.6 percentage points from the same period last year.
