Wei Wenhou's "Five-Step Technique of Knowing People" was taught by his guest Li Ke.
Wei Wenhou was bitter that there was no suitable minister, and he invited Li Ke to say: "Sir once taught me that 'if the family is poor, you want to marry a virtuous wife, and if the country is chaotic, you want to be a good wife.'" Now I want to choose Cheng Xiang, either Wei Cheng or Zhai Huang, what about these two people? Li Ke replied, "The lowly do not talk about the nobles, and the alienated do not talk about the people close to them." The position of the courtier was outside the palace gate, and he did not dare to undertake this mission. Wen Hou said, "Sir, you don't have to push back when something happens." ”
Wei Wenhou said of Li Keye: "Sir, there is a saying: 'The family is poor and thinks of a good wife, and the country is chaotic and thinks of a good face.'" 'What about the second son, who is not in the midst of this? Right: "Inferiority does not seek respect, neglect does not seek affection." Li Ke saw that he could not shirk it, so he said, "This is the reason why the monarch does not pay attention to the investigation." If you want to identify talents, you must pay attention to the following points: usually see who he is close to, when he is rich, see who he makes friends with, when he is noble, see who he recommends, when he is sleepy, see what he does not do, and when he is poor, see whether he is good. These five points are enough to decide, why wait for me to say it! Wen Hou said, "Sir, go home, my prime minister has already been chosen." ”

These five points that Li Ke said to Wei Wenhou are the famous "Five Methods of Knowing People", also known as the "Five Essentials of Knowing People", or "Five Steps of Knowing People".
First, who is close to you in ordinary times
As the saying goes: Things are clustered in groups, and people are grouped. He added, "Those who are close to Zhu are red, and those who are close to ink are black." "Whoever is close to him in daily life can see who he is: what kind of person he is, what kind of friends he has; what kind of friends he has, you know what kind of person he is."
Second, who to make friends with when you are rich
Who do you have money to make friends with: do you eat and drink with smelly fox friends, pull and pull, pull small circles to form alliances of interests, or do you help the crisis, fund the poor, and recruit and cultivate talents for the country? For example, Wei Wenhou chose Wei Cheng this time, and he used nine-tenths of his feng lu to recruit talents for the country, leaving only one-tenth of it at home. When the power is powerful, is it nepotism, one person is enlightened, and the chicken and dog ascend to heaven, or is it meritocracy and meritocracy? The above-mentioned Wei Cheng once recommended to Wei Wenhou the three great sages of the time, Bu Zixia, Tian Zifang, and Duan Ganmu. All three were worshiped by Wen Hou as teachers. They all worked hard and made suggestions, and made great contributions to the strength and prosperity of the Wei state.
Fourth, what not to do when you are trapped
People who are in trouble because of their unsuccessful careers and setbacks in their careers want to get out of trouble as soon as possible and embark on a smooth road again. How? Is it a salary to taste courage and forge ahead, or a fly camp dog, speculative drilling camp? The practices are different, and the character is high and the judgment is high.
Fifth, whether to take it when you are poor
When you are hungry and hungry, when you are shivering with cold, it is the time when you can best test human character. It is an attitude to starve to death than to be eaten by the food that comes from it; it is an attitude to lose one's integrity and sell one's soul in order to survive. The boundaries between the eldest husband and the survivor are clear.
